Exotics Essential Oils Part 2; Blog 13

Exotics Part 2; Blog 13

Sandalwood (Santalum album) essential oil is steam distilled from the heartwood of the tree. My sore grade is the finest, perfume grade, essential oil, preferred by aroma therapist. It is also very expensive. Most sandalwood oil is Agmarked, a grade guaranteed to comply with Indian government standards.

The sandalwood tree is native throughout India. Southern India cultivates most of the heartwood used for aromatherapy. Mysore oil is used throughout Asian cultures for medicinal and spiritual qualities. It’s finest quality is to calm the mind and open the heart. The aromatic scent is long lasting, and woodsy. Sandalwood is a low note, or fixative for essential oil blends. It releases slowly over a long time, holding onto the other more volatile essential oils.

Men often choose Sandalwood as a fragrance. Its mysterious effect is both relaxing and erotic. Sandalwood has many properties and is famous as an aphrodisiac. The subtle effect of the scent is like androsterone, a component of the male hormone, testosterone. Apply two drops undiluted onto the throat.

As a spiritual fragrance, Sandalwood encourages enlightenment, the highest form of insight. The fragrance, used alone, enhances warmth and understanding, components of compassion. The scent can awaken the power of kundalini energy, transforming brainwaves to conform with cosmic energy. The spirit will soar to a crescendo of colorful light and sound, a totally unique experience, dropping the conscience awareness into the depth of the “beyond”.

In the body, Sandalwood treats cystitis and urinary tract infections. Add 7 drops to a warm bath and soak 15 to 20 minutes. Sandalwood is nontoxic and can be used in skincare to heal dry or weeping eczema. For bronchitis, dilute 3 drops of Sandalwood in one ounce of carrier oil and rub the dilution onto the chest. The same dilution may be rubbed onto the pelvis to reduce symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease. The most promising application of Sandalwood is to nurture the nervous system by application or inhalation. Sandalwood reduces anxiety, stress and aggressive behavior.  It promotes relaxation, quiet contemplation, and meditation.

Here is a blend for males only.

                                    Night Mood

In 3 ounces of jojoba carrier oil add:

5 drops of Sage (Salvia lavenduliflora) essential oil

10 drops of Sandalwood (Santalum album) essential oil

2 drops of Rose (Rosa damascene) essential oil

Use a dark a dark glass bottle to contain the fragrance. Cap tightly. Allow curing 3 hours before applying 4 drops to the neck and throat. Massage lightly.

Ylang ylang (Canangium odoration) is considered a feminine scent. The scent is intensely sweet and flowery. It is a native of the Philippines, excluding an erotic, tropical flavor, opposite and compatible with Sandalwood. The intense scent of Ylang ylang can be sedated with the addition of 2 drops of Sandalwood or citrus essential oils. Ylang ylang, like Jasmine is enhanced by dilution.

The scent and growing conditions of Ylang ylang accents its fascinating nature. The tree grows 66 feet tall with very large creamy flowers. However the flowers only develop their intensely fragrant scent when tended by a caring ad knowledgeable gardener. The tree responds to compassionate, human touch, by producing the most fragrant flower of any tree. Ylang ylang means flowers of flowers in Malayan.

Being an organic gardener, Ylang ylang’s unique growing conditions and nature is most interesting to me. In order to produce fragrant flowers, the tree must be trimmed on a regular basis, at least every two months. The branches naturally bend downward to allow large flowers to be harvested. Fall is the harvest time when the flowers are fragrant and contain essential oil. One hundred pounds of flowers produce nearly two pounds of essential oil from steam distillation. The flowers are harvested early in the morning and immediately distilled to produce an aromatic liquid.

Ylang ylang produces an endorphin effect from the brain. The fragrance may act as an aphrodisiac, analgesic, or antidepressant. Scent affects us individually, and Ylang ylang is a great example of a scent that restores calm and balance to one person and chases another recipient far away. The scent has more staying power than most essential oils, which dissipate quickly and loose their scent. Add 1 drop of Ylang ylang to a perfume or healing lotion to enhance its nature.

The essential oil of Ylang ylang is often added to cosmetics. The alluring scent has an unusual ability to relax facial muscles. Tension and aging seem to disappear as a blend is massaged into the face. The overly sweet smell of Ylang ylang is reduced with the addition of orange, neroli, lemongrass, grapefruit, or Sandalwood essential oils. Ylang ylang is most effective for oily skin. However, it benefits all skin types because it softens and rejuvenates the skin.  The phytohormones balances moisture in the skin as it releases facial tension.

                                    Soothing Facial Message

In 2 ounces of jojoba oil add the following essential oils. Allow to cure 1 to 3 hours before application. Slowly massage the face using an upward motion.

Eucalyptus, the herb of the Aborigines

Eucalyptus, the herb of the Aborigines

Eucalyptus, the blue gum tree, originated in Australia.  Today, it is also cultivated in India, California, North Africa, Egypt, and Spain, prized for its essential oil.  It is a member of the Myrtle family.  There are at least 50 species of eucalyptus trees, an interest to every Koala bear.  Only two species are used in aromatherapy, Eucalyptus globules and citriodora.  The first is known as blue gum, with round blue green leaves.  Citriodora is the Lemon eucalyptus, having pointed leaves with 85% citronellal, a bactericidal.  The latter is more cooling and antiseptic with a pleasant lemon scent.

Australian Aborigines used eucalyptus to combat malaria and fevers.  The tree absorbs large amounts of water from the earth.  Natives combated malaria by growing trees near standing stagnant water.  When this was later repeated in other parts of the world, the eucalyptus eradicated the incidence of malaria.

In the 1900’s the botanist, von Muller, introduced the essential oil to the Western world.  The Eucalyptus globulus, the oil glands are visible when held up to the light.  Steam distillation produced the essential oil.  Fifty pounds of leaves and branches yields one pound of essential oil.  The Citriodora produces a lemon yellow, clear oil with a delicious lemon-scent.

Eucalyptus is one of the most well-known essential oils.  It certainly has one of the strongest odors and cancels many lighter scents when blended.  I like to combine eucalyptus and peppermint to see which one dominates the blend.  Both are great antispasmodic pain relievers and work well together.  However, I always think I smell like a locker room when I wear a blend with peppermint and eucalyptus.

Eucalyptus is popular in topical treatments for arthritis and rheumatism.  When stiffness and lack of mobility is a symptom, this massage blend will work wonders.  I prefer Lemon eucalyptus in this blend because it moves and drives trapped energy and pain.

Oh, my aching back blend

In 2 ounces of olive oil, or a carrier oil of choice, add the following essential oils.

10 drops of Lemon eucalyptus (citriodora)

                          2 drops of Pine

                          2 drops of Cedarwood

                          6 drops of Peppermint

                          1 drop of Clove

Allow to cure 3 hours.  Apply warm to the back, knees and legs, massaging using small circular motions.  Follow with warm, moist heat, as desired.  Massage the feet with the blend as the recipient relaxes.  Repeat as desired.

Store remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap away from direct heat and bright light.

Eucalyptus is best known for its actions on the lungs, bronchial and throat.  It is a great remedy for coughs, colds, flu, bronchitis, asthma and upper respiratory infections.  As an inhalant, eucalyptus has been used to help tuberculosis patients.  I use it with chronic pulmonary disease patients.  The essential oil activates red blood cell function, carrying oxygen to every cell in the body.  Terpene is the natural occurring ingredient in eucalyptus that is very medicinal.  In synthetic and many commercial eucalyptus essential oils, terpene is removed.  The aroma is more fragrant, but less potent.  Check you source to make sure terpene is present.

When treating the lungs or asthma, eucalyptus is best diluted into a carrier oil.  Asthmatics may prefer aloe vera gel because it will feel cool on the skin.  Aloe is also detoxifying, even through the skin.  Others will benefit with jojoba or sweet almond oil.  The following blend will aid most upper respiratory problems for adults and teenagers.  Eucalyptus will help children more in an aroma lamp or by diffusing it into a room.

Lungs, Asthma, Colds and Flu Blend

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, combine the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus

                          6 drops of Rosemary

                          1 drop of Tea Tree

3 drops of Sweet Basil, Ocimum basilicum

Combine well or cure for 3 hours when possible.

Massage the upper back using large, circular motions.  Gently massage the chest, using small circular motions, with several drops of blend.  Cover the upper torso with an old t-shirt or pajama top.  Repeat every 2 or 4 hours, as needed to reduce symptoms.

Asthmatic attacks often occur when the blood sugar drops.  Make sure the recipient drinks and/or eats every 4 to 5 hours, except when sleeping.  Lifestyle habits should include a balanced dietary program.

Store any leftover blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.

Bronchitis may respond better to diffusion through an aroma lamp or room diffuser.  Eucalyptus may be used alone or in combination with pine, lavender, rosemary, Melissa, basil or lemon verbena.  Since eucalyptus overpowers lighter aromas, consider saving the lavender, Melissa and lemon verbena for other fragrant blends.  Eucalyptus alone is a powerful remedy for the lungs and bronchials.

Sinusitis is another problem eucalyptus will help.  It opens the sinuses to ensure proper drainage.  If there are pockets of infections, eucalyptus’ antibiotic properties can usually cure them.  I have used blends with clients who refused sinus surgery and their bodies healed when the problem was chronic infection.  Dot the blend across the forehead and around the cheeks, avoiding the eyes.  Repeat 2 or 3 times a day until symptoms clear.

Sinusitis Blend

In one ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus

                          1 drop of Sage

                          1 drop of Tea Tree

                          3 drops of Frankincense

                          1 drop of Ginger root

Allow to cure 3 hours, if possible.  Apply to clean skin on the forehead and cheeks.  Repeat every 2 to 3 hours, as needed to drain the sinuses.  For a stubborn infection, it may require several days of treatment.   If fever occurs, seek medical help as well.

Store remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Place in a cool area away from direct light.

Eucalyptus is an excellent addition to a cough suppressant blend.  Combine it with Cypress for spasmodic cough and Myrrh to reduce mucus.  Infuse a room or make this blend.

Spasmodic Cough

In 1 ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        6 drops of Eucalyptus

                        4 drops of Myrrh

                        3 drops of Cypress

2 drops of Anise seed (Star anise) (Illicium verum)

Allow to cure 3 hours when possible.  Massage the upper back and chest near the sternum.

This blend can be made into an inhalent by dropping the essential oil blend into 2 cups of steaming water.  The blend may also be added to an aroma lamp to infuse a room.

Store leftover blend in a dark, glass bottle with a screw cap.  Keep in a cool area away from direct sunlight.

Eucalyptus can be dabbed on insect bites and stings.  It effectively repels insects and kills lice.  As an antifungal, dilute it and apply on athlete’s feet.  Two drops of eucalyptus can be diluted in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil to treat the symptoms listed above.

In a sitz bath, eucalyptus treats cystitis, leucorrhea discharges and genital itching.  Eight drops diluted in a sitz bath for 15 to 20 minutes daily will usually clear symptoms in a few days.  Eucalyptus is not recommended for children in a bath or sitz bath.

A whiff of Eucalyptus, dropped on a hankie, can clear the mind of confusion and enhance clarity.  Interestingly, people nearby will either move closer or farther away from the aroma!

Skin Renewal Part 3

                                                      Skin   Renewal   Part 3

Eczema and contact dermatitis affect millions of people. Both display symptoms of red, inflamed skin. Flaky skin, rashes and itching may lead to weeping blisters and local infection. Cradle cap is related to eczema, affecting mainly babies and young children. The scalp develops a thick, yellow crust with scaling behind the ears. Contact dermatitis is caused by sensitivity to an irritant, such as wool or washing detergent. Atopiceczema is related to food allergies in children. These include peanuts, corn products, milk, eggs wheat citrus, strawberries and preservatives. Both conditions require awareness of irritants and allergens. It is beneficial to increase essential fatty acids in the diet. Also, reduce caffeine, alcohol, sugary and fatty foods such as donuts and pastries.

Essential oils can be wonderful stress reducers. Topically, they must be diluted to 1% into carrier oil. Use carrier oils specifically for troubled skin. Borage, jojoba, and primrose oils are best suited for these conditions. Fresh aloe may also be used as carrier oil. If the skin is very sensitive, I use the carrier oil alone at first and add the essential oil as the skin begins healing. Avoid all commercial products that list parabens and fragrance. Some aromatherapy products use chemical scents in combination with essential oils to extend the fragrant shelf life. Be sure to know your source of products.

When my twins first started bleeding externally from eczema, I began using healing water on their skin. Rose water achieved the best results in the shortest amount of time. I distilled my water, but you can make a simple rose water using the following recipe.

                                              Skin Renewal Mist

In 4 ounces of distilled or filtered water, add 5 drops of Rose Otto essential oil. Pour into a 4-ounce container with a mister spray top. Spray the inflamed or affected area 2 or 3 times daily to reduce irritation, itching and scaling skin. Use more when needed. Store remaining rose water in a cool place away from direct sunlight.

Note: It is important to continue hydrating the skin even after the condition improves.

Weeping eczema and sores are best treated with a dilution of myrrh essential oil. I dilute it in jojoba oil to keep the skin safe and protected from infection The following blend is a recommended dilution, safe for children and adults.

                                             Weeping Eczema Application

In a 1-ounce jar filled with jojoba oil, add 2 drops of myrrh essential oil. Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight in a tightly sealed jar. Stir the liquid with a non-metal stir before application. Using a glass dropper put several drops on a clean cloth or sterile gauze.

Gently apply to affected area. Repeat 2 r 3 times daily until the condition improves. Store remaining blend in a cool place away from direct sunlight. It will keep for 6 months.

Dermatitis and eczema appear very often on elbows and behind knees, under the chin, underarms and groin area. The following blend may be applied as needed to troubled areas. This blend may also be worn to prevent problem skin.

                                       Protective Skin Therapy

In a 2-ounce jar with a wide mouth, add 2 ounces of jojoba oil. Add 5 drops of German chamomile. Cover with a tight fitting screw lid. Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight. To apply, put several drops on a clean cloth or sterile gauze. Gently apply the blend to affected skin. Repeat 2 or 3 times daily, or as needed to facilitate healing.

The following blend is great to alleviate dry, itchy skin. Adults and children can use it.

                                      Itchy Skin Compress

In 1 cup of distilled or purified water, add 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Aluminum free baking soda is referred and may be purchased at a health store in the baking section. Stir the water. Add 3 drops lavender essential oil. Stir again using a non-metal stir after adding the essential oil. Soak sterile gauze in the water and apply to an itchy area of skin. Leave on for 5 to 10 minutes. Use clean sterile gauze and apply to another area, after soaking it in the lavender water. Repeat until the water is used. Discard any leftover water.

If a large area of skin is itching, draw a cool or lukewarm bath. Add ¾ cup of baking soda. Swirl the water with a clean hand to dissolve the baking soda. Add 8 drops of lavender and swirl the water again to distribute the lavender. Immerse the body into the bath and soak15 minutes. Pat dry with a clean towel when finished.

                                   Rosacea

Rosacea   is an unusual disorder of the sebaceous glands. The red pustules and hyperplasia of the oil glands occur on the nose, cheeks face and/or chin. It occurs 3 times more often in women than men. The exact cause is unknown. Sunlight usually makes symptoms worse, as does red wine, caffeine and fatty foods. Acne may also occur, as well as patches of dry, cracked skin. I have helped women with dry, cracked, crusty skin covering their entire face to the earlobes. Other people may only experience reddening of the cheeks. Doctors for symptoms prescribe tetracycline antibiotics.

In severe cases, I use rose hydro late only, sprayed on the skin several times daily. The rose oil blend in pure water may also be used. Make sure the rose oil is pure and unadulterated, which would worsen the symptoms.

For milder cases, treat with rose or lavender essential oils diluted in jojoba oil. Blue or German chamomile can also be used. Be sure to do a skin test on a small area of facial skin to determine safety. Remember, jojoba oil is not a true oil and will not adversely affect the skin.

Rosacea Skin Treatment and Facial Massage

In 2 ounces of jojoba oil, add the following essential oils:

  6 drops Rose

  3 drops Lavender

  1 drop German chamomile.

Allow the blend to cure 3 hours in a dark, glass bottle with a glass dropper. To apply, drop 4 or 5 drops of the blend on the fingertips. Using firm strokes, move the fingers from the nose to the edge of the face. Continue to repeat this motion over the entire face up to 10 minutes. Reapply drops of the blend as needed. This is a daily routine, best performed at night after cleaning the face. This is a specific massage to reduce rosacea symptoms.

Aromatherapy: How Aromas Heal

How Aromas Heal

Aromas heal through the complex and sensitive sense of smell. Aroma molecules are so tiny we cannot see them. Yet, the olfactory receptors in the nose transmit this information directly to the brain via hairlike cilia moving the aromatic molecule to the front of the cerebrum of the brain. The aroma molecules then move across nerve synapses to the olfactory tract. The information is then sent to the cerebral cortex of the brain that detects scent. This portion of the brain initiates the sense of smell... all in 1/100th of a second! The olfactory nerves are able to regenerate so those suffering from loss of smell can usually be helped with aromatherapy.

What is unique about the sense of smell? It is the only sense with direct access to the brain.   Once an olfactory receptor identifies an odor, nerves send this information directly to the limbic part of the brain. The aroma triggers a memory, the memory triggers a behavior or emotion identified with the odor.

The limbic brain also works with the endocrine glands in the brain, the pineal and hypothalamus to regulate hormone production. Aromas positively affect appetite control, insulin production, metabolism, stress, sex drive, and body temperature. Only fragrant odors pass directly to the limbic system by the electrical impulses of the olfactory nerves. Offensive or unusual odors are filtered through the cerebral cortex of the brain, which processes new information.

The limbic olfactory brain releases neurotransmitters that reduce pain, release sexual and “feel good’ endorphin sensations. Motivation, inner feelings, moods, depression, memory, creativity and aversion to others are all regulated by the limbic brain.

Smell is so important that we develop a unique smell in the womb. We live our lives attracting and repelling people, animals and insects by our unique scent. Our scent can be enhanced by pleasant fragrances and essential oils. Our unique scent is like an individual snowflake. Essential oils can enhance without changing the unique pattern.

Our inherent health is related to our immune systems and derived from the unique scent. When essential oils are inhaled, they enter the lungs and attach to the oxygen rich molecules that circulate throughout the bloodstream. As they are delivered to individual cells, the aromas assist in self-healing.

Essential oil molecules have physical shapes and sizes as well as scent. Fragrant aromas, such as rose essential oil, have a floral disc shape. Mint and citrus aroma molecules have a wedge shape and resins, such as vanilla or sandalwood, have a round shape. As with aromas, every illness has a unique odor. In hospitals, clinics and private practice, I create aromas to help heal imbalances.

The essential oils and flower essences I grow and manufacture have antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. As the aromas circulate throughout the bloodstream, they work as antioxidants and preserve the texture of the skin.

When applied to the skin, diluted into a carrier oil, lotion or shampoo, essential oils initiate T killer cell immune function, lymphatic drainage and support connective tissue.  The skin is a dynamic organ, regenerating every 28 days and is the largest immune organ. It is also the largest detoxifying organ, breaking down chemical and environmental toxins to extend the life of cells. Essential oil products work synergistically to cleanse, protect, soften and preserve the skin.

Inside the body, the healing aromas help the immune system destroy foreign cells. Then, they increase lymphatic drainage to remove debris from the body. Essential oils that have been inhaled or applied to the skin can be detected in the urine 2-3 hours later.

Healing Waters from Steam Distillation of Essential Oils

Healing waters are the steam condensation that carries essential oils in a distillation process. The water is distilled with all the properties of the plant and a tiny amount of essential oil.

Distillation is a process that has been used for at least five thousand years. Most essential oils are produced by distillation. The water separated from the essential oil is called a hydrolate. I refer to them as healing waters.

To distill is a time consuming process. When a plant produces the most essential oil, usually the spring and summer months, the leaves and or flowers are stripped from the stems, ground to a paste and combined with water.

Once blended, the plant material is poured into a glass-distilling container. The contents are boiled to soften the tissue and release the essential oil. The essential oil is carried by steam into a long condensing tube, surrounded by cold, flowing water. The cold water flowing inside the outer casing of the condensing tube cools the steam into a liquid. The water drips, carrying the essential oil, into a glass vessel. The oil floats on top of the healing water, or hydrolate. The essential oil is separated commercially by hexane most often. As a small grower I separate with glass and no chemicals. The water is now available as a healing agent in different ways than essential oils.

Healing Waters are most often used to moisturize the skin. They are very gentle to the skin tissue. When using healing waters as moisturizers, I like to recommend which ones are best for skin conditioners. I add a few drops of essential oils to add flavor to the Healing Waters I make. These are not distilled water with essential oils added. The waters are distilled from an aromatic plant, encompassing all the healing properties of the plant. They work best as a spray misted on the skin one to three times a daily.

Remember to add Healing Waters to footbaths and pleasure baths.  Keep a favorite Healing Water in the refrigerator to refresh your face with a fragrant mist after gardening or exercising. Use a favorite Healing Water to refresh your pillow case before resting.  Spray your favorite Healing Water in every room of the house as an air freshener.  Use a Healing Water spray to refresh the pet pillow.

Spray Lemon Grass Healing Water to repel mosquitoes.

Spray Basil Healing Water to repel flies.

The Power of Scent

he Power of Scent
Aromatherapy is the use of organic essential oils, derived from aromatic plants, to catalyze inherent health and well-being, sexual attraction, beauty and creativity.
The power of scent begins when the chemical components of an odor created from volatile fragrant molecules, is transformed into nerve impulses. This information is pulsed to the limbic olfactory brain via the olfactory bulb. The limbic brain stores the scent as a memory. This aroma memory is stored where the core of sexuality, attraction, repulsion, moods, motivation and creativity resides. Here, the power of scent directly affects the neurotransmitters that reduce pain, increase energy and alertness, help us relax and motivate sense of well-being and will to live. Only unfamiliar or offensive odors pass through the cerebral cortex first. The limbic olfactory brain developed first when the sense of smell was paramount to survival. The neurotransmitters that stimulate and inspire the cortical, thought producing brain, originated the limbic brain as aromas.

Everything organic and alive has a unique odor. Every illness has a unique odor. As individuals, each of us acquires a unique scent in the womb we carry throughout life. This can be catalyzed and modified by essential oils, affecting our moods, immunity, stress management, circulation and lymphatic drainage.
Essential oils have been successfully used in healing for over 5,000 years. Until recently, no one understood why. In the 1920’s and 30’s, two Italian scientists, Dr. Cayola and Dr. Garri, conducted the first scientific experiments on the effect of essential oils on the nervous system. Calming or stimulating effects were measured in the breathing frequency, blood pressure and circulation. Their testing also confirmed the ability of essential oils to destroy bacteria. During this time, a professor at the University of Milan treated anxiety and depressive disorders using essential oil combinations. In 1937, the French chemist, Gattefosse’ published the first book on aromatherapy, describing medicinal and cosmetic applications. Since then, many methods and applications have been used to directly affect brain chemistry in less than 1/100th of a second, changing psychological, hormonal, pain, stress, memory, and sleep disorders.
Applied to the skin, essential oils pass through connective and lymphatic tissues into the circulatory system, affecting detoxification and immunity. The skin is the largest immune organ, detoxifying more environmental toxins and chemicals than the liver, while protecting against bacterial and viral invasion. Essential oils help balance helper and suppressor immune responses in the skin, reduce or retard bacterial and viral growth, and protect the skin through hydration, softening and preserving the epithelial tissues. Essential oils are more active and potent than any preservative used commercially. Their anti-aging properties are most effectively used in cosmetic and skincare.

Essential oils can enhance healing on multiple levels in the body and psyche without interfering with medications. Within 2 to 3 hours after smelling or applying essential oil dilutions on the body, the volatile oil compounds are excreted through the breath and urine. At least 80% of illness and disease can be positively corrected by proper essential oil usage, including obesity, a well known but little understood illness. Aromatherapy is unique in that it catalyzes the body to heal itself resulting in little or no side effects. Aromas coerce and train the body to respond positively to every challenge, utilizing all potentials to enhance healing. As in other “natural” modalities, aromatherapy is safe when used correctly. Therapeutic aromatic plants produce essential oils, usually through steam distillation and subsequent separation. The concentration of volatile and other properties in essential oils is 100 times greater than the original plants. Essential oils contain 50 to 500 other natural chemicals than the predominant scent. One drop of an essential oil contains millions of microscopic molecules. It requires several pounds of plant leaves and/ or flowers, such as in Province Lavender, to produce a teaspoon of pure essential oil. Synthetic essential oils, or nature synthetic oils, are not therapeutic. They are produced chemically in a lab and do not contain volatile oils which natural healing abilities. In fact, the word essential oil is misleading. These volatile oils, so sensitive to light heat, and air, only have an oily texture. They are mostly hydrocarbons, made from hydrogen and oxygen, known as terpines. Other properties may include alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, phenols, oxides, peroxides, lactones, acids and sometimes sulphur. These are naturally occurring substances available in foods. Essential oils are safe used topically in dilution. They are not safe internally, even in dilution, and should never be ingested. Essential oils are best stored in dark glass bottles, tightly sealed, away from heat and light. Store them in a refrigerator or dark, cool closet. Do not leave droppers with rubber bulb tops sealing essential oil containers. The volatile oils lift, degrade and destroy the rubber. Plastic insert caps are acceptable. Opened bottles are best used within a year. I will discuss safety issues with discussion of each essential oil. Knowledge is power.

In my professional experience, using essential oils in hospitals and clinics, essential oil therapy is quick, effective and safe. I have designed blends for bone marrow and stem cell transplant patients, used in totally sterile conditions longevity increased, medication usage decreased, as well as nausea, anxiety and pain levels.
Since then, I have designed blends for chemically dependents, chronic pain and sickle cell anemia, pulmonary, cardiac, immune deficiencies, most cancers, sleep disorders, ADD and ADHD, maternal and palliative care, inflammatory bowel disease, autism and the list continues as needs arise.
The applications of essential oils are topical and aromatic. Next week, I will begin to discuss dilution and carrier oils. Suggested recipes will included each week.
Until then, dilute 3 drops of your favorite essential oil in a cup of hot water as it diffuses in the room, notice how your body responds to the aroma. Enjoy!

Carrier Oils

Carrier Oils

Essential oils are diluted in fatty oils, called carrier oils, for application. Direct application of essential oils, with few exceptions, is harmful to the skin. Unsaturated fatty oils support the healing process. They help the skin breathe, absorb vitamin D from sunlight and regulate temperature. Choose carrier oils that are cold pressed and unprocessed before expelling. The skin cannot utilize mineral oils. They are made from petroleum and block absorption. Choose oils for the skin that are edible. (Avoid canola oil.) These oils will enhance elasticity and soften the skin. They also provide nutrients, which can be utilized by the skin. Carrier oils are chemical compounds of glycerol and fatty acids.

Carrier oils are best used for massage as essential oil dilutions for the face and skin. They are safe for babies as well as adults. To date, most commercial baby oils and lotions contain mineral oil and are not healthy for massage or dilutions. Choose a carrier oil that best suits the area of application, for example, jojoba oil is best used for facial applications. It absorbs rapidly without an oily residue. Jojoba oil is beneficial for all skin types. However, for burns and scrapes, St. John’s Wort or aloe gel is best for healing. The shelf life of carrier oils is 8 to 10 months.

Sweet Almond Oil is the most popular and versatile carrier oil. It benefits every skin type, releasing the healing qualities of the essential oil or blend slowly through the skin. Almond oil is odorless and light in texture. As a cold pressed oil, it contains small amounts of vitamin A, E, thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B12) and pyridoxal phosphate (B6.)

Jojoba Oil is not oil but a liquid wax derived from the fruit of a Native American desert plant. Jojoba Oil has unique properties, of fat, fatty acid and alcohol, producing a natural emulsifier that does not oxidize or become rancid. As a cold pressed oil, jojoba’s anti-inflammatory properties heal many skin conditions. As an emulsifier, jojoba is beneficial in creams, shampoos and lotions. The Native Americans have used jojoba oil for eczema, psoriasis, acne and dry skin. It is easily absorbed. Jojoba contains vitamin E to soften the skin and provide PSPF 4 UV sun protection.

Grape seed Oil is an odorless oil used for oily skin. It blends well with other carrier oils for massage.

Coconut Oil is a rich solid massage oil that melts at 76 degrees. It is used to improve hydration and mature skin as a massage lotion and face cream. Melt the solid oil in a container by placing the container in a pan of hot water. As it softens, add essential oils and stir gently. refrigerate or allow to set at room temperature in a covered container prior to application.

Olive Oil has disinfectant properties ideal for healing wounds. Historically, it has been used to reduce rheumatic and arthritic complaints. Olive oil conditions dry hair and skin. The oil is heavy and odorous. To avoid smelling like a salad, combine olive oil with a light oil such as almond or jojoba oil in a 50 percent dilution.

Wheat Germ Oil is thick oil used for dry and aging skin. It is expressed from wheat kernels and is high in vitamins A, D, and E. The oil gets rancid when exposed to air. To prevent this, use 20 percent wheat germ oil and 80 percent vegetable oil, such as cold pressed sunflower, sweet almond or jojoba oil. (Do not use canola oil.) Refrigerate any extra wheat germ oil in a dark, glass bottle.

Some carrier oils are herbal infusions in sunflower or olive oil.

Comfrey (Symphytum officinalis) relieves arthritic pain, bruising and scrapes. (See Comfrey Yarrow Healing Cream.)

Aloe Vera Gel can also be used for essential oil dilution. Add 2 drops of grape seed oil to reduce oxidation. The gel helps heal burns and relieves eczema and psoriasis.

Mineral oil and canola oil (most canola is genetically modified and it is suggested to avoid this oil,) are not recommended as carrier oils and should be avoided in aromatherapy.

The following are examples of carrier oils used in essential oil dilutions.
