The Great Harmonizer- Blog 23

The Great Harmonizer- Blog 23

Lavender is one of the best essential oils for harmonizing a blend, a perfume, or a treatment. The scent can neutralize an odorous blend that is overpowering. Small amounts of lavender can also be added to a perfume blend that is very sweet or floral. A few drops of lavender will produce a calming, yet refreshing addition to the blend.

Once the combination is applied the aroma will blend with the individual’s body chemistry, releasing a unique odor. A blend will smell different on every person. If you are preparing a blend for another person, the blend can be tested with perfume blotters. These are small strips inserted into the blend, after each additional oil. Smell the strip immediately and every 15 minutes afterwards for up to one hour. This will allow the potency to be adjusted and the true scent to ripen. Once the aromas are completed, allow the scent to cure up to 3 days before applying. It will be fun to smell the blend every day to observe how it changes. Keep a notebook of every blend, the number of drops of each essential oil, and how the smell affects you. When the receipt wears the aroma, note how he or she is affected by the smell and what feelings or memories it evokes.

If you are making a blend to wear, apply a drop on your skin and observe the scent and affects after each essential oil. You can use perfume blotters if you prefer. Perfume blotters may work best with an alcohol base, like a perfume. When preparing an alcohol base perfume or cologne, allow the completed blend to cure for up to a month, noting observations on a daily, or weekly basis. A perfume can transform totally overnight. It is exciting to create an alchemical process. Notes and observations will aid maturation of your skills as an aromatherapist.

Lavender heals many skin problems. It is antiseptic, astringent, and deep cleansing. The balancing effect treats dry skin and acne. Like rose, lavender benefits every skin type. The oil stimulates lymphatic drainage to reduce toxic impurities metabolized by the skin. This increases new cell growth for hair, scalp, and skin. Add lavender in a hair rinse and it reduces hair loss. Use lavender to treat eczema and psoriasis combined with pure lemon balm essential oil. It is safe to use on diabetic skin ulcers and boils. Wear lavender undiluted for stings and insect bites.

The following combination treats soft tissue skin problems, including eczema and psoriasis. Always skin test a small area prior to treating the entire surface.

Lavender has been used for cystitis and urinary symptoms for at least 200 years. It works well with juniper essential oil in a sitz bath to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. An easy preparation is to make the following bath salt recipe.

Lavender Bath Salts

In a 16-ounce glass jar, add:

6 ounces Epsom salts

2 ounces sea salt

Mix thoroughly and add:

40 drops of L. officinalis

10 drops Juniper, Juniperus communis

2 drops Cedarwood, Cedrus atlantica

4 drops Sandalwood

Cap tightly. Sore in a cool cabinet or closet. Allow to cure 7 to 10 days before adding 4 ounces to a warm, drawn bath. Note: Not recommended for children. Consult a physician immediately if fever occurs with any urinary symptoms.

I have used the lavendula officinalis, I grow, for over 10 years in hospitals in combination with Petite Fleur essences and other essential oils for nausea, and side effects of chemotherapy. It is important to begin wearing the blend before chemotherapy starts, so the individual will not correlate lavender with the side effects of chemotherapy.

Nausea during pregnancy is treated individually. Although lavender reduces nausea and motion sickness, it does not always help pregnant women. Each expectant mother must find the aroma to help her. Usually it is some bizarre aroma, such as eucalyptus. However, lemon is a good guess. Some moms to be prefer no aromas. Moms rule. When baby arrives, essential oils are not recommended for children under 18 months. Lavender is not recommended for male children.

To reduce insomnia and encourage a good night sleep, have a lavender foot and body massage. Sleep with the angels!

The First Aid Tree

The First Aid Tree

Tea tree, also Ti tree, has effectively been used for thousands of years to treat wound care by the Australian Aborigines.  Melaleuca began its ascent into the western world during World War II.  It was included in every soldier’s first aid kit who was fighting the Pacific front.  Like the Aborigines, soldiers crushed the leaves and applied them to wounds and skin conditions.  By the early 1960’s, American studies proved Tea tree as an effective treatment for trichomonas infection as pessaries or a bath.  Soon Tea tree gained international fame as a germicidal and immune stimulant.

There are three Melaleuca varieties that are medicinal.  Melaleuca alternifolia is the most popular variety.  It is an Australian native tree.  Niaouli, Melaleuca viridiflora is also an Australian native.  This variety treats respiratory problems.  It is often used as steam inhalation.  Melaleuca leucodendron, known as the Cajeput tree, is also used for respiratory illness.  It grows in the Phillipines and Indonesia.

Tea tree essential oil is extracted by steam distillation.  The twigs and, most of all the leaves produce this very potent oil.  Melaleuca oil is a clear or slightly yellow liquid.  The odor is very high in intensity.  The camphorous odor is pungent and very medicinal smelling.  It makes my eyes water!  However, the oil is nontoxic and usually nonirritant to the skin.  It is an unforgettable odor.

The Alternifolia variety is the smallest tree of the Melaleucas.  It may pass as a shrub, with needle-like leaves.  Flowers are yellow or purple without a stalk.  The flower heads appear at the end of the needles.

Melaleuca cajeput is a tall, evergreen, growing 100 feet into the heavens.  The leaves are thick, flat and pointed.  The bark is thick and spongy to touch.  The tree bears white, feathery flowers.  Oil extracted from the leaves and twigs produces a slightly green, milder essential oil.  The green color is due to traces of the mineral, copper, in the tree.  Compared to eucalyptus, the scent is milder, with a slightly fruity odor.  All varieties may be applied alone and undiluted for some treatments.  However, my experience is that Melaleuca is even more beneficial when combined with other oils, such as thyme, eucalyptus, clove bud, pine, rosemary and lemon.  Melaleuca is generally tolerated, which makes the oil more valuable as a cure-all in aromatherapy.

Melaleuca has skin protective properties. This blend may be used topically, .  Please seek medical help whenever infection is present.

Summer Fitness

Summer Fitness

Grapefruit, Citrus paradisi, has been added to blends for weight reduction.  Grapefruit also helps reduce inches, making it a perfect choice for summer fitness.  The grapefruit is believed to evolve from a Caribbean fruit, known as the shaddock.  Today, grapefruit is grown commercially in the United States, Israel and parts of South America.  The ruby red, or pink variety, is preferred by aromatherapists and perfumers for its excellent, uplifting aroma.  Essential oil is machine expressed from the peel of ripe fruit.  The aroma stimulates the brain, resulting in a euphoric effect.  It is a great essential oil to use when life is too much, or self- doubt overtakes good thoughts and affirmations. Just open the bottle of grapefruit and let the aroma lift you.

Good morning Fragrance

In ½ ounce of jojoba oil, add the following essential oils:

                        15 drops Grapefruit, Pink

                          5 drops of Sweet Orange

                        10 drops of Neroli

                          3 drops of Styrax benzoin

Bottle in dark glass with a tight- fitting cap.

Allow to cure overnight, or up to 3 days.  Adjust the blend to “taste”.  Apply a drop to each temple and massage the oil into the hair near the temples.  Apply another 2 drops to the throat or neck, massage gently and enjoy the day.  Refrigerate blend and all the citrus essential oils.  Use the blend and essential oils within 6 months.  The blend will continue to marry over the following 3 weeks.  After completion, adjust the blend adding more of any of the desired essential oils.  Note:  Styrax benzoin has an amber aroma.  It is an excellent “fixative”, or base note for an aroma blend.  It dissolves easily in alcohol, which can be substituted for jojoba oil.  Best to use perfume alcohol, 190 proof.

Grapefruit is an excellent detoxifying essential oil.  The main effect is calming irritable moods or angry outbursts.  In the body, grapefruit enhances movement. Grapefruit blends well with other citrus oils, palmarosa, rosewood, ginger and rosemary.

 Massage Blend

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, combine the following essential oils:

                        30 drops of Pink Grapefruit

                          2 drops of Ginger root

                          5 drops of Rockrose

5 drops of Lemon or Lemongrass

Bottle in dark glass with a tight- fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Massage the limbs, moving towards the heart.  Then massage the back and front of the torso using brisk, circular, clockwise motions.  Apply cool packs to the back if it comforts the recipient.  Refrigerate remaining blend and use within 6 months.

Refreshing Foot Massage: If you enjoy foot massage, you will love using this blend during the hot summer months.  The addition of lime makes this blend a great deodorant.

In 1 ounce of sesame oil, add the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Grapefruit

                        20 drops of Lime

                          2 drops of Sandalwood

Bottle in dark glass with a tight- fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure for 3 hours or overnight.  Slowly massage the blend onto the bottom of the feet, ankles and top of the feet.  Watch the recipient melt into a blissful relaxed state of mind.  Refrigerate any leftover blend and use within 6 months.

Bath salts are fun to make and even more enjoyable to experience.  Here’s one children will love, big “kids” too!

Fruity Bath Salt Blend: In a 1- quart glass jar with a screw cap, blend 2 cups each of Epsom salts and Dead Sea salts.  These alts relax muscles, joints and skin.  Add the following essential oils to reduce cramps, promote relaxation and a good mood.  Stir and mix well:

                        10 drops of Pink Grapefruit

20 drops of Tangerine, Citrus Madurese's

10 drops of honey or Honey oil absolute

                          5 drops of Sandalwood

Cap tightly and allow curing for 10 days.  Add a cup of salts to a tub of warm water.  Stir the water with your hand to blend and dissolve the salts.  Soak for 15 to 20 minutes.  Avoid splashing the eyes.  Store leftover salts in a cool, dark place.  Use within 3 months for best results.

Grapefruit also removes excess fluid and prevents fluid retention.  It has a tonic effect on the skin and tissues.  Massage this blend onto the skin you’d like to tighten and tone to enhance summer fun.

Blend: In 1 ounce of jojoba oil, or double distilled witch hazel, add the following essential oils:

10 drops of Grapefruit (Pink grapefruit smells the best)

10 drops of Mandarin, Citrus reticulata

1 drop of Nutmeg, Myristica fragrance

                          1 drop of Coriander

Bottle in dark glass with a tight- fitting cap.  Allow to cure overnight in the refrigerator or a cool, dark place.  Briskly massage onto clean, dry skin.  Repeat, rubbing several drops onto the affected area.  Cover with a warm, moist towel.  Repeat daily, if desired.  Refrigerate leftover blend.  Use within 3months. Soothing the Inner Core- Blog 24

Soothing the Inner Core- Blog 24

Chamomile, Matricaria chamomilla is gentle and kind to the body and emotions. A traditional herb and essential oil for children, it is low in toxicity and also safe for pregnant women, elderly, and sensitive folks. The most beneficial effects are soothing the nervous system. Irritable children, teens and adults find contentment from the effects of chamomile. Before learning the many benefits of this humble, yellow flower, let’s differentiate between the two varieties used in aromatherapy. Both originate from the sunflower family of composite. Matricaria chamomilla is German chamomile. The flowers are only diluted to produce an essential oil. It is known as blue chamomile because the essential oil and absolute contain azulen, the active component and healing agent. Azulen is cobalt blue with a very pronounced and intense aroma. It is preferred as a healing essential oil, but rarely used alone. The fragrance is often combined with compatible aromas to be more pleasing to the recipient. It blends well with lavender, clary sage, lemon, lemon grass, and litsea cubeba, neroli, sweet orange, and bergamot, lemon balm, geranium, and rose. Benzo, cedarwood, and coriander are compatible base notes.

Anthelmis noblis is Roman chamomile. The essential oil is distilled from the flowers and leaves. It contains much less azulene and has a milder and sweeter smell so often associated with chamomile. I grow both varieties. The Roman chamomile is bushier and has larger, flat leaves. When brewing herb tea, German chamomile tastes sweeter. In contrast the Roman variety makes a very stout tasting tea with an overpowering aroma.  The essential oil of Roman is a pale, light yellow color, easily distinguished from the cobalt blue German chamomile, which is very thick and viscous. If you want the essential oil solution to smell good, use Roman chamomile. Roman is also preferred for children and sensitive people. German chamomile is preferred for skin problems. The following provide the soothing balm of chamomile. Use them to reduce tension, worry, or discomfort.

While traveling south of the border gathering information for Mother Nature’s Herbal, I found this combination most compassionate travel companion. Mexican and South Americans prefer chamomile to relieve tummy troubles and often use it when overeating causes bloating.

Skin Renewal Part 2 Blog 27

Skin Renewal

The first recipe is for cracked or very chapped skin. Cracked skin occurs on the hands, feet, face, and near, or around the mouth. This condition is very hurtful to many people. Chapped skin occurs mainly on the cheeks, lips and hands. The skin hurts, even when a soothing cream is applied. Therefore, an oil blend will be also offered. Both may be used for each condition. The essential oils will differ.

 Skin Renewal for Cracked Skin

In 4 ounces of Moisture Now cream or 4 tablespoons of carrier oil add:

12 drops of German (blue) chamomile

5 drops of Patchouli

3 drops of Myrrh

Stir bottle in a 4-ounce container with a tight- fitting lid. Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight. Lightly massage into cracked skin morning and night. Avoid long, hot baths until skin heals.

 Skin Renewal for Chapped Skin

In 4 tablespoons of carrier oil, such as avocado, aloe vera gel, or jojoba oil add:

10 drop Rose

15 drops lavender

4 drops benzoin

Bottle in a dark glass with a screw cap. Allow to cure 3 hours. Turn the bottle over to mix the blend well before applying twice daily to chapped skin using light strokes. Reduce exposure to wind, cold or hot temperatures as skin adjusts.

Another condition that can be helped with essential oils is red capillaries on the face and skin. They appear to be red lines, usually on the cheeks. Those with fair skin and sensitive complexions are most affected. The use of alcohol and caffeine may aggravate the condition, as well as using soap for cleansing. Clay masques may also aggravate the condition. The following formulas will offer alternative care.

People who have these fine, red capillaries on their face will benefit from using the gentlest cleansers and products on their skin. Hydrosols, or healing waters that are a byproduct of distillation, are excellent to mist on the face for extra moisture and deep pore cleansing. Melissa, or Lemon balm, rose, geranium, and lavender are good choices.

To soothe red capillaries, the following suggestions will help make a healing blend. It may take several weeks or months to see the results desired. Be persistent and keep a daily regime for skincare. Your skin will look more youthful and radiant for the effort.

Broken Capillary Treatment

In 3 fluid ounce dark, glass bottle, add the following oils:

3 drops Neroli

5 drops Rose

2 drops Lavender

Add 1-tablespoon witch hazel and 2.5 ounces of rose, Melissa, orange flower or linden flower water. Cap tightly and allow to cure 3 hours. Before applying, turn the bottle over 2 or 3 times to thoroughly mix the contents. Essential oils rise naturally to the top. Apply the capillaries morning and night after cleansing with a cotton ball or clean cloth.

Note: Only rose can be successfully used in this formula for very tender skin. Use the same formula, substituting 10 drops of rose essential oil for neroli and lavender.

The following recipe can be used to deep cleanse, tone, and moisturize troubled skin. It is an acceptable substitute for clay masques. The main ingredient is honey, which is safe for cracked, sensitive skin, rosacea, or acne. It will not dry hard on the skin.

Honey Masque

In a wide mouth glass jar add:

2 ounces of honey

1 tablespoon lavender or rose hydrosol to thin the honey

4 drops of geranium

2 drops of Roman chamomile, optional

Stir the ingredients with a ceramic, wooden, (or plastic) spoon, or instrument. Avoid metal. It reacts with the essential oils. Apply the honey masque to clean skin with the fingertips, using light strokes. Cover the face and neck as desired. Allow setting 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm or cool water. Any remaining diluted honey can be sealed and refrigerated for use within 3 days.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin problem that requires various treatments. Severity also varies. The symptoms include smooth red areas, scaling, and plaques, lesions defined in a ringed area and acute eruptions of pustules. Symptoms are usually chronic and may come and go for no apparent reasons. A physician diagnoses is definitive for this skin disease. Most research supports psoriasis to be a dysfunction of the skin’s enzymes. The epidermal, top layer of skin, suffers from a rapid turnover of cells and dilation of the capillaries.

In aromatherapy, specific essential oils and carrier oils, nurture and protect the epidermis. These products help regulate the skin’s temperature, reduce allergic reactions, while eliminating environmental and metabolic waste. They will help regenerate cell regeneration without stimulating dermal cell  renewal for psoriasis treatment. This is a variation from other aromatherapy treatments we have studied.

Evening primrose oil, borage and avocado oils specifically help psoriasis treatment. Borage oil is least expensive and works equally as well as other oils. A combination of 2 or 3 of these oils at any time is preferred. Ingesting encapsulated evening primrose,

and borage oil with meals may also help. They contain omega 6 essential fatty acid,

which aids many body processes.

My research suggests this skin condition is precipitated by incorrect melatonin release from the pineal gland. Melatonin levels naturally rises at night to encourage sleep. Psoriasis clients have low melatonin levels at night and higher levels during the day. Melatonin is sometimes deficient in psoriasis sufferers. Melatonin levels must be determined by a competent health professional and monitored on a regular basis.

For practical purposes, follow these simple rules. Do not sleep with a light on or shining into the bedroom. Cover large mirrors at night that may reflect light. Use ultraviolet light or get  at least 30 minutes of sunlight daily or several times a week.Exposure may be up to 2 hours, using protective clothing. Visit the ocean when possible and allow your skin to be nurtured by seawater. Best times to enjoy sunshine is before10A.M., or after 5 P.M. Remember that sunblock is most protective during the first hour after application. Call the manufacturer listed on the label for details of any sunblock used.

If you work at night and sleep during the day, even 30 minutes in a room using ultraviolet light may be beneficial. This is a specialty light widely available at lighting stores and some hardware stores. Also enjoy sunshine on weekends, holidays or days off to stimulate proper melatonin levels.

Allergy and stress may precipitate breakouts. My dietary research and experience over 30 years, indicate certain foods  may encourage a breakout. Fats from nuts, peanuts, and other dietary oils can contribute to psoriasis breakouts.Monitor fat intake and reduce nuts and especially peanuts. Seeds may be an acceptable substitute. Other foods may  be dietary stressors. These must be individually identified and reduced or removed from the diet. Every fat, including avocado must be eaten in moderation. Successful treatment includes dietary modification for psoriasis conditions.

Several essential oils help reduce and manage psoriasis. These essential oils have high odor intensity and are best used in small amounts. They include myrrh, cajeput, teatree, cedarwood, lavender, and angelica root. The following blends are diluted in the carrier oils best suited for psoriasis.

                                         Psoriasis healing oil

Combine 1 tablespoon avocado oil, borage seed oil or evening primrose oil in a clean non metal container. Glass is best. Please use cold pressed oils. Be sure to refrigerate these oils after opening. Add the following essential oils:

                           5 drops of Myrrh

                            3 drops of Teatree

                           5 drops of Lavender

5 drops of Cajeput, Melaleuca cajeputi

Mix with a non metal stirring stick or spoon and apply  the mixture to affected areas of the skin twice daily.Refrigerate any leftover blend in a tightly sealed container. Use within 2 days. The following blend has a more socially acceptable aroma and may be used as an alternate blend for social settings and work.

Toner for Acne-prone Skin

In 4 ounces of witch hazel, available at pharmacies, add the following essential oils:

                          4 drops of Cedarwood

                          2 drops pf Tea Tree

                          3 drops of Eucalyptus

10 drops of Lemon Verbena, Lippia Citriodora

                          1 drop of Thyme

Allow to cure overnight.  Turn the bottle over to mix the oils.  Apply to clean skin with a cotton ball 2 or 3 times daily.  Store in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Store in the refrigerator.

Hair Care for an Oily Scalp

In 8 ounces of non fragrant shampoo, add the following essential oils:

                          6 drops of Cedarwood

4 drops of Swiss Pine, Pinus cembra

                          4 drops of Sage

                          2 drops of Cypress

                        16 drops of Lemongrass

Allow to cure overnight.  Shampoo hair and scrub the scalp vigorously.  Let the shampoo penetrate the scalp 3 to 5 minutes before carefully rinsing all the suds from the hair and scalp.  Repeat every other day until the scalp normalizes.  Then shampoo twice a week.  I recommend shampoo without sodium laurel sulfate.  Consider balancing the diet with more fruits and vegetables and very little fats and fried food.

Dandruff Shampoo for an Oily Scalp

Make the blend above and add

                        10 drops of Lavendula

                          2 drops of Tea Tree

Follow directions for oily hair care.

Consider adding essential fatty acids to the diet from 3 ounces of salmon or 1 tablespoon of flaxseed or borage oil.  I recommend cooking whole flaxseed in 1 cup of water for 3 to 5 minutes and drinking the tea.  Flaxseed becomes rancid immediately after oxygen combines with it.  Refrigerate any unused seeds.

Hair Loss Blend

In 1 ounce of jojoba oil add the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Rosemary

                          2 drops of Lemongrass

2 drops of Swiss Pine, Pinus cembra

                          4 drops of Coriander seed

Allow to cure 3 hours.  Massage gently onto the scalp where hair loss is occurring every night or 30 minutes before shampooing the hair.  Bottle in dark glass with a tight- fitting screw cap.

Another property of Cedarwood essential oil is helping a circulation. This property makes it an excellent addition for an arthritis and rheumatic blend.  Circulation to the muscles is especially increased, enhancing joint muscle integrity.  Blends can be made into compress or massage aromas.  Cedarwood tonifies where there is weakness.  The following blends are warming, comforting and uplifting.

Enhancing Blend

For Muscles and Joints

In 4 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                          6 drops of Cedarwood

                        10 drops of Cinnamon leaf

                          2 drops of Ginger Root

                          3 drops of Cypress

                          5 drops of Juniper berries

Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Warm a few tablespoons in a cup or glass of hot  water 3 minutes before massaging onto joints and muscles.  Repeat twice daily for pain, or once daily to continue regeneration.

Relaxing Blend

For spasms and stiffness

In 4 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                          4 drops of Cedarwood

                        10 drops of Peppermint

                          6 drops of Eucalyptus

                          1 drop of Angelica Root

                          4 drops of Swiss Pine

2 drops of Nutmeg, Myristica Fragrans

                        10 drops of Orange

Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Massage several drops on affected area.  Add moist heat for several minutes to assist penetration.  Continue to apply the blend every night or every 4 to 6 hours, as needed to reduce symptoms.  Bottle remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Refrigerate.  Warm blend in a cup of hot water before using again.  Moist heat applications will assist this blend.

Cedarwood is an excellent aid to reduce skin problems. Those with reduced circulation, can also benefit from this blend.  Cedarwood is so strong, I recommend a very light touch in this dilution.  The amounts may be doubled in twice the amount of carrier oil.

In 1 ounce of jojoba oil, add the following essential oils.

                          1 drop of Cedarwood

                          2 drops of Sandalwood

                        10 drops of Lavendula

3 drops of Lemon balm (Melissa)

Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Swab the affected area with a sterile gauze.  Use a separate gauze for each area treated.  Repeat 2 times daily, always cleaning the affected area thoroughly before applying the blend.  It may take 10 to 21 days for healing and regeneration to occur.

Cedarwood can be used as an insect repellent for people and pets.  Fleas and ticks move another direction when they smell this balsamic odor.  Use it sparingly in dilution to avoid irritating the skin.  A dilution can be sprayed on a pet’s bed, in an outside setting or on the skin.  Although essential oils do not mix well in water, it is easily dispersed as a spray.  Turn the spray bottle over a few times to disperse the essential oils before misting.  Avoid the eyes or sensitive skin.

Cedar Insect Repellent

In a 4 ounce spray bottle, add the following essential oils:

                        4 drops of Cedarwood

                        6 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus

                        2 drops of Pine

                        6 drops of Rosemary

Fill the bottle with distilled water.  Allow to cure overnight before chasing the critters away.

Remember that Cedarwood is a base note.  It works as a fixative, holding down the blend so the aroma lifts slowly over time.  Use it sparingly, a few drops go a long way.

Blog 17- Petitgrain

Blog 17- Petitgrain

Petitgrain, Petitgrain bigarade, is the essential oil of green bitter orange leaves and twigs. The aroma has an herbaceous woody undertone with a fresh, orange blossom scent. The essential oil has a very intense odor, best used with a light touch.

The scent is very tart and stimulating. A drop in an aroma blend can revitalize a combination that has lost its pizzazz. It is standard and a favorite aroma in colognes. Petitgrain is not a substitute for Neroli, orange blossom absolute or sweet orange essential oils. It stands alone as a perfume, cologne, and skincare essential oil par excellence.

Petitgrain naturally stimulates the mind and supports memory. In contrast Neroli, is relaxing and calming to the nervous system. To enhance memory and concentration, Petitgrain blends well with Rosemary, lemon or lemongrass essential oils. These oils will support the tart odor of Petitgrain. The following aromas can use, especially by adults, to increase concentration time and enhance memory.

Petitgrain Blend

In one ounce of carrier oil, add:

            7 drops Petitgrain

2 drops lemon peel or Lemongrass essential oils

            5 drops Rosemary

Bottle in a dark glass with a tightly fitted cap. Allow curing 1 hour before applying, turning the bottle over 1 to 2 times to combine the oils. Wear a few drops at the temples or on the nape of the neck.

Petitgrain is a natural skin toner. It blends well with frankincense as a base note, and Lemongrass as a heart note to make a skin toner. Rose of any variety can be used for more sensitive or mature skin. Petitgrain is a high note, or also known as a head note. Another optional high note is Palmarosa, which hydrates dry skin and balances sebum secretions.

Balanced Skin Toner

In 2 ounces of aloe vera gel add:

            ½ ounce of witch hazel

1 ½ ounces of distilled or spring water

            3 drops of Petitgrain

2 drops Palmarosa, Cymbopogon martini (optional)

            2 drops frankincense

            2 drops of lemongrass

4 drops Rose Otto or absolute of your choice (optional)

Tightly cap in a dark, glass bottle. Apply to clean skin 1 or 2 times daily.

 Petitgrain Cologne

In four ounces of 190 proof alcohol add:

            8 drops Petitgrain.

            6 drops Bergamot, Citrus bergamia

1 drop Benzoin, Styrax benzoin or S. Tonkinese's

2 drops Cocoa, optional. It is very expensive.

            2 drops Tangerine

2 drops Rose absolute or R Otto (Increase to 4 drops, as desired.)

            1 drop Geranium

2 drops Ylang ylang extra or absolute.

Cap tightly in a dark glass bottle. Allow curing up to one month. The aromas will blend and change into one scent that will lift in multidimensional layers from your skin.

Petitgrain has more than one source as an essential oil. Commercially, it can be produced from bitter orange, sweet orange, lemon and tangerine leaves, twigs and unripe fruit. The essential oil from bitter orange is very uplifting and is labeled Petitgrain bigarade. Petitgrain citron Mier, from the lemon tree calms nervousness. Tangerine, Petitgrain mandarinates soothes tension and rigidity. Petitgrain enhances some of the exotic spices aroma flavors. Use Petitgrain in blends that appreciate its tartness. The following ideas may spur your creative talents.

Massage Oil for the Tummy

Petitgrain marries well with coriander to reduce tummy troubles and nervous stomach. Massage the abdomen up to 3 times daily to reduce symptoms. See a health practitioner if symptoms prevail.

In 4 ounces of warm carrier oil, add:

            12 drops of Coriander

            5 drops of Petitgrain

            3 drops of Sandalwood

Cap tightly in a dark, glass bottle. Turn the bottle from side to side a few times to mix well.

Chronic nerve pain blend

Petitgrain takes clove and clarysage to a heightened intensity in this blend. Massage areas, such as back, neck, and limbs to reduce discomfort. Use this blend three times daily. Patch test first to assure safety.

In four ounces of Sesame oil add:

            8 drops of Clove

            4 drops of Petitgrain

            5 drops of Clary Sage

Cap tightly in a dark, glass bottle. Turn the bottle over three times to mix well. Store remaining blend in a cool, dark place. The aromas and healing qualities increase with time, even a few hours. Keep a blend ready in storage.

Joy of the Mountain

Joy of the Mountain

Marjoram has a cousin growing wild on the hillside of Greece, Origanum vulgare, Oregano.  Many of the properties of Sweet Marjoram are magnified in Oregano, known to the Greeks as the “joy of the mountain”.  As an essential oil, oregano is very antiseptic, antiviral and treats bronchitis, poor appetite, absence of menses, cellulite, sinusitis, and chronic skin problems.  The essential oil is too strong for infants and pregnant mothers.

Oregano essential oil is spicy, stimulating and very warming.  The oil is steam distilled in mid summer when the plant blooms an umbrella of flowers.  The oil is so strong it must be diluted to prevent irritation to the skin and nose.  Leaves, soft stems and flowers produce a pale yellow and sometimes brownish colored essential oil.  There are several varieties of oregano; Greek oregano is the strongest smelling and most potent variety.

Oregano is easy to grow.  It loves hot, dry, sunny weather and tolerates rocky soil.  In a natural habitat very little water or care is necessary.  I grow it in herb and rose beds as a ground cover.  One season’s growth can produce pounds of plant material for distillation.  One pound of oregano can produce at least one ounce of pure, uncut essential oil several times during a growing season.

Aromatherapists often do not use oregano, especially in blends, because the aroma is so predominant.  Sweet marjoram is much milder and sweeter for blends requiring a subtle harmony.  Oregano is used for purely medicinal blends, employed as a great healer for thousands of years.  It can be used singly or blended with equally pungent, spicy and odorous essential oils.

Oregano is one of our best antiviral, anti-fungal essential oils.  Use it in anti-fungal blends, especially on toenails and nails for the most stubborn problems.  I have used it in blends for tropical skin rotting diseases, working in the jungles of Central America, Guatemala and Mexico with excellent results.  Vietnam vets, with 30 years and more of fungal infestation, have successfully treated nails and skin with this blend.

Anti-fungal Blend

In 1 ounce of carrier oil add the following essential oils:

                        4 drops of Oregano

                        2 drops of Tea Tree

                      10 drops of Eucalyptus

                        2 drops of Cedarwood

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure overnight.  Massage onto nails and fungal growth twice daily.  Discontinue if irritation occurs on the skin and rinse thoroughly.  A reaction is rare, but can occur occasionally with strong essential oils, such as oregano.

One of the most useful remedies for sinusitis includes oregano.  I have had many clients who avoided sinus surgery using this blend.  It can also reduce headaches and congestion.  Grapefruit seed oil is used for its antiseptic properties.

Sinus and Headache Blend

In 1 ounce of grapefruit seed oil, or a carrier oil of your choice, add the following essential oils:

                        5 drops of Basil

                        2 drops of Oregano

5 drops of Lemon, or Lemongrass

2 drops Dalmation, or Spanish, Sage

                        1 drop  Thyme

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting screw top.  Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Lightly massage a few drops on the forehead, cheeks and temples, avoiding the eyes.  Repeat 2 or 3 times daily.  Wait 30 to 60 minutes between applications.

Constipation and sluggish digestion is often remedied with a quick abdomen application of oregano oil.  Other essential oils can be added to assist oregano’s potency.  As mentioned in earlier chapters, essential oils are best diluted and applied to the skin.  It is not necessary to ingest them.  Strong essential oils, like oregano, can be toxic to the liver and kidney when ingested, even if it is diluted.  Use the skin as an immune organ to carry the benefits of oregano to its destination.  In cases of chronic constipation, it can take 30 days to change the pattern.  Those who suffer from diverticula may achieve varying results, due to poor muscle tone of the colon.  Do not use oregano when inflammation, diverticulitis occurs without your physician’s approval.  I suggest soothing blends during inflammation.  Use this blend for occasional or chronic constipation.

Regularity Blend

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                          4 drops of Oregano

                          6 drops of Anise

                        10 drops of fennel

                          2 drops of Ginger root

                        10 drops of Orange

1 drop of Black pepper (optional)

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure 3 hours, or overnight.  Massage on the abdomen using vigorous clockwise motion for several minutes.  The blend can be applied every morning or after each meal.  Use the blend within 6 months.

Bronchitis and chronic asthma can benefit from regular aromatherapy massage.  Start with the upper back and progress to the ribs and chest.  Regular massage can greatly reduce occurrence.  If the blend is too odorous for the recipient, massage the feet with this blend on a weekly or occasional daily basis.  This blend can also be diffused into a room for quick results.  When diffusing essential oils, do not dilute them into a carrier oil.  Apply them directly into a diffuser or into 2 cups of very hot water.

Chronic Lung Conditions

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Lemon

                        10 drops of Eucalyptus

                        20 drops of frankincense

                          4 drops of Oregano

                          1 drop of Cedar

5 drops of Carrot seed oil

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Cure 3 hours or overnight.  Massage onto the upper back and chest every week, or daily when symptoms flair.

Oregano can also be used as carrier oil base.  Add essential oils or apply warm to arthritic, aching, sore areas.

Oregano Carrier Oil

Heat 2 cups of vegetable oil in a sauce pan.  As the oil begins to simmer, add 1 cup of fresh or freshly dried, organic oregano.  Stir and simmer for 10 minutes.  Remove from heat and cover 10 more minutes.  Strain into a glass jar.  Apply warm to aching joints and sore muscles, or add the following essential oils for a more potent blend.

Arthritis and Fibromyalgia Blend

In 2 ounces of oregano carrier oil add:

                        15 drops of Peppermint

                          6 drops of Eucalyptus

                          6 drops of Clove bud

                          2 drops of Ginger

4 drops of Dalmatian Sage (Spanish)

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Massage locally onto unbroken skin.

Oregano hydrosol, or hydrolate, is so potent, I use it as an insect repellent.  This is the water that condenses from steam distilling oregano essential oil.  It is ready to spray on people, pets and plants to repel bugs.  Do not directly spray sensitive or broken skin, as it may be irritating.  Mist pet pillows or areas where pests can accumulate.  Add a few drops of Citronella essential oil for each cup of hydrosol and repel mosquitoes and flying insects also.  Enjoy a pest free summer with the additional healing qualities of this culinary herb.

Hair Care

Hair Care

Creating a therapeutic aroma shampoo will increase immunity, memory, and enhance natural beauty. Hair is an extension of skin and can be treated as a skin condition. Choose essential oils that you can enjoy because you will smell the aroma all day. Treating the condition of the hair will stimulate or sedate the immune system. Memory can be enhanced with essential oils that increase focus and attention span. Choose a shampoo without scent, if possible. Sodium laurel sulfate dries the hair and should be avoided in a shampoo. Castile soap, as a liquid, works well as a shampoo for children, pets, and people with oily hair. Dry and chemically treated hair benefits from a silky, pearlized shampoo containing amino acids. Ten to fifteen drops of essential oils can be added to six ounces of shampoo base of your choice. The aroma will blend into the shampoo base overnight. Shake gently before using. Here are a few ideas for hair care.

To six ounces of shampoo add:

Dandruff – Six drops of Peppermint (Mentha peperita)

Eight drops of Lavender (Lavendula species)

Chemically treated – Three drops of Rose (Rosa species)

Three drops of Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

Six drops of Lavender (Lavendula species)

Scaly, itching scalp – One drop Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)

One drop Clary Sage (Salvia scalerea)

                                   Six drops Lavender (Lavendula species)

                                   Three drops Sandalwood (Santalum mysore)

Hair growth – Six drops Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Six drops Coriander Seed (Coriandrum sativum)

                       Two drops Neroli (Citrus aurantium)

Oily hair – Six drops Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)

                  Three drops Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

                  One drop Sage (Salvia officinalis)

                  Two drops Peppermint (Mentha peperita)

Dry hair – Six drops Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora)

                 Two drops Chamomile (Matricaria recutica)

                 One drop Sage (Salvia officinalis)

                 Two drops Peppermint (Mentha peperita)

Split ends – Two drops Palarosa (Cymbopogon martinii)

Two drops Marigold Mint (Tagetes foeniculum)

                    Two drops Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

Normal hair – Three drops Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

One drop Cedar wood (Cedrus atlantica)

                       Two drops Lime (Citrus aurantifolia)

For more protection, a conditioner is helpful and easy to create. After a shampoo and rinse, towel dry the hair and apply the following conditioner. Rinse with cool water after 2 or 3 minutes. Towel dry and style.

In two ounces of jojoba oil add:

Three drops of Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

One drop of Cedar (Cedrus atlantica)

One drop of Jasmine (Jasminum officinale, sambuc)

Or

One drop of Lavender (Lavendula species)

True Jasmine essential oil is very expensive. Lavender can be substituted in this recipe, and can be used for every hair type. The jojoba oil can be substituted with a hydrolate, healing water. Next we will learn about healing waters or hydrolates.

Shampoo For Pets

Geranium: Also Out of Africa- Blog 25

Geranium: Also Out of Africa- Blog 25

Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens, P. odorantissemum, is a native of South Africa. It was exported to France in the late seventeenth century where it was hybridized and distilled. The leaves and stems are distilled to produce essential oil when the small flowers begin to bloom. There are many verities of aromatic geraniums. Rose geranium produces the fragrant essential oil used in perfumes and aromatherapy. The essential oil is a light color with a hint of yellow and green. It has a rose scent with a tart smell. To me it lacks the richness of rose essential oil. Rose geranium is often substituted for rose essential oil in commercial products and perfumes. It is added as a rose extender. The price of rose geranium is very inexpensive compared to natural rose oil. We are so fortunate to have both essential oils available.

Initially, geranium oil was used as an insect repellent in aroma lamps. Women discovered the scent lifted their mood and enhanced their energy. Rose geranium is definitely useful in reducing depression. Colognes and products worn on the face and neck helped dispel depression. The following cologne can be used to relieve stress and lift depressed moods.

Old fashion Cologne

In 2 ounces perfume alcohol, 190 proof add:

15 drops Geranium

5 drops Bergamot

1 drop Rosewood

1 drop Patchouli

Bottle in dark glass with a screw top. Allow to cure 3 days or longer before applying the cologne on the throat and front of the neck.

Geranium became very popular as a skincare aid. It helps all skin types, because it balances the sebum secretion. Geranium’s antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties benefits acne prone skin.

The following recipe is a great facial steam for oily or acne prone skin. Use weekly for best results.

Facial Steam to correct Troubled Skin

In four cups of steaming hot water add:

20 drops Geranium

5 drops Cypress, Cupressus sempervirens

5 drops Lemongrass

6 drops German chamomile

1 drop Yarrow, Achillea millefolium

Tent head and face with a clean towel. Allow steam to penetrate the skin, but not burning the skin. A safe distance from the steaming bowl of aroma water is 1 foot from the face. Back away if the steam becomes intense. After a few seconds, return to the facial steam. Repeat the process up to 15 minutes. Pat dry and rinse with cold water to close the pores. Pat the face dry with a clean towel.

Geranium is a great choice for menopausal women. The scent has helped women through the heat flashes, moods, and hormonal changes associated with menarche. I find it also helps to open a new channel of creativity after the child bearing years. Women become active in new careers, community efforts, charities, and hobbies. Aromatherapy helps women find their direction, voice, and newfound strength. Here is a hair conditioner to strengthen dry hair and make it manageable. It helps thinning and encourages a happy feeling.

Good Hair Day Conditioner

In 4-ounce plastic pet container add:

2 ounces aloe vera gel

2 ounces jojoba oil

10 drops Geranium

10 drops Ylang ylang extra or absolute

2 drops Rosewood, Aniba rosaedora

4 drops Sandalwood

Cap and turn the bottle upside down to mix thoroughly. Allow to cure overnight or longer. Apply to hair after a thorough shampoo and rinse. Allow 3-5 minutes before rinsing with cool water. Towel dry and style. This conditioner may be applied daily to wet hair, washing only once or twice weekly, to treat dry hair. Use a shampoo without sodium laurel sulphate to prevent dryness.

If psoriasis of the scalp is a problem, apply this blend at night.

Psoriasis Blend

In 1-ounce jojoba oil, add:

5 drops Lavender

6 drops Immortelle

2 drops Geranium

2 drops Rockrose

Bottle in dark glass with a screw top. Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight. Massage small amounts on affected areas with the fingertips nightly.

Use only natural products on the hair and scalp. Avoid methylparaben in all hair and skincare products. Never go to bed angry or tense. Enjoy an aromatic bath before bedtime.

Bath Indulgence

Draw a warm, comfortable bath. Add the following essential oils in a cream base. Relax and let your troubles float away.

In 3 tablespoons of cream add:

10 drops Lavender

6 drops Geranium

Combine oils into the cream. Add the warm bath water, and swish your hands throughout the water. Climb in and enjoy! Relax 15 to 20 minutes and towel dry. Life will look much sweeter. Sleep will be great!

A good way to nurture mature skin is to apply a masque. An easy masque is made with egg white. Clay masque can be messy to assemble and drying to mature skin, depending on the ingredients and the essentials oils used. For those quick pick me up days, use this simple masque to tighten pores and leave a beautiful shine on the skin.

Mature and Sensitive Skin Treatment

In one tablespoon of egg white add:

2 drops Geranium

1 drop Frankincense

Clean face and neck thoroughly. Mix the egg white and essential oils. Using fingertips, apply the mixture to the face and neck. Reapply the rest of the mixture liberally. Allow to dry about 5 minutes. Rinse with cool water. Pat dry with a towel. Apply moisture.

Geranium is an excellent choice of oils to increase circulation and lymphatic flow in the abdominal area. The intestines have a large concentration of lymphatic tissue. The lymphs can build toxicity and cause bloating, constipation, and spasticity of the bowel. The following formula can be used occasionally or daily to enhance health and longevity.

Tummy Rub for Irritable Bowel or Constipation

In 4 ounces of carrier oil add:

5 drops Peppermint

10 drops Geranium

1 drop Ginger

8 drops Fennel

2 drops Angelica root

5 drops Coriander seed

Bottle in dark glass with a screw top. Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight. Apply several drops to the abdomen and massage in a circular motion. Breathe rhythmically and deeply. Rub for 5 minutes. Apply a warm, damp compress as desired. Avoid during pregnancy or heavy menses. Increase water intake to 64 ounces daily.

Next we will put our knowledge into practice making lotions for skin renewal.
