The Young at Heart

The Young at Heart

Tangerine, Citrus madarosis, originated in China and the Far East, as the mandarin orange.  Citrus reticulata came to the West in the early 1800’s.  When mandarin orange trees came to America, it became known as the tangerine.  Today’s tangerine is larger and more aromatic.  True mandarin essential oil is very sweet and floral.  The essential oil of mandarin is non-toxic, and perfect for children.  It calms children, reducing fear and insomnia.  Essential oil is produced by cold pressing the outer skin.  An orange- colored oil is produced.  Children enjoy mandarin or tangerine oil in a bath or foot rub.

Calming Foot Rub

In 1 ounce of warm sesame oil, add the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Mandarin’

                        10 drops of Tangerine

                          2 drops of Sandalwood

Mix well with a non-metal instrument.  Apply warm to little feet.  Gently massage the oil into the bottom of the feet.  Cover the feet with clean socks.

Bottle remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting cap.  Refrigerate until further use.  Finish the blend within 3 months.  Also refrigerate mandarin and tangerine essential oils.

The elderly enjoy mandarin to enhance digestion and peristalsis.  Mandarin treats indigestion, hiccoughs, constipation and colic.  Combine it with stimulating fixatives, such as coriander, cinnamon, or ginger root.  Apply warm to the abdomen.

Stimulating Digestant

In 1 ounce of warm carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Mandarin

                        10 drops of fennel

                          2 drops of cinnamon

                          2 drops of coriander

Mix well with a non-metal instrument.  Apply warm to the abdomen and massage for several minutes in a clockwise motion.

Children may prefer tangerine substituted for mandarin essential oil.  The therapeutic properties are similar, children preferring the less floral aroma of tangerine.  The question may be whether sweet orange essential oil can be substituted for tangerine or mandarin.  Sweet orange will be energizing, but not as specific as the other two oils.  It is more specific for unblocking sluggish energy, especially of the liver and spleen.  Orange is balancing; mandarin and tangerine are calming.

Bottle any remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Refrigerate and apply warm daily to normalize digestion.

Mandarin combines well with neroli to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy.

Stretch Mark Prevention Blend

In 2 ounces of jojoba oil, add the following essential oils:

                        15 drops of Neroli

                        25 drops of Mandarin

                          2 drops of Tonka bean

Allow to cure overnight.  Massage onto the tummy with clockwise, circular motions every day.  Refrigerate remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.

Mandarin is safe during pregnancy.  Here is a headache blend to use for tension   and seasonal headaches.

Mama’s Headache Blend

In 1 ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Mandarin

                        12 drops of German Chamomile

                          2 drops of Cardamom

Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight when possible.  Massage 2 drops on each temple, the forehead or back of the neck.  Relax with either a warm or cold compress across the center of the forehead or back of the neck.  Bottle remaining blend in dark glass with a tightly fitted screw cap.  Refrigerate.

Tangerine is excellent oil for premenstrual tension.  Use it throughout the month, in mid cycle, or during those crabby or weepy days to chase the blues away.

How to Treat a Lady

In 1 ounce of sesame oil, add the following essential oils:

                        15 drops of Tangerine

                          5 drops of Geranium

                          5 drops of Lemon Balm

1 drop of Clary Sage or Angelica root

Clary is more calming; Angelica is more centering and is a fixative to hold the aromas.

Tangerine offers a less floral or sweet blend to lift the mood form crisis to complacence.  Sesame oil is also soothing to the nervous system, the best carrier oil for this blend.

Allow the blend to cure overnight, bottled in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap, in the refrigerator or a cool, dark place.  Massage 5 drops onto the neck and throat 2 or 3 times, as needed, to maintain a happy presence.

Tangerine also helps a sad or pouting child build positive feelings.  I like to combine Tangerine with a small drop of vanilla when it’s crying time again.  Diffuse the blend into a room and share to joy.  Adults will benefit from the aroma lift also.

No More Pouting Blend

Combine 20 drops of Tangerine with 1 drop of Vanilla essential oil.  Drop into a cup of steaming, hot water, or diffuse into the room.  Relax and enjoy the benefits.

Tangerine has antiseptic, cleansing and toxic properties.  The oil helps correct oily and acne prone skin.  It can also be added to a shampoo or rinse to alleviate acne occurring below the hair line on the back of the neck.  I choose tangerine because it does not have a floral or sweet scent like mandarin.  Tangerine is a good choice for teenagers who can benefit from the uplifting effect.  It also smells better than tea tree, eucalyptus and the strong aromas used in acne and oily skin treatments.

The following blend is a new and unique one.  For best results, avoid fatty and fried foods.  Eat six or more cups of fruit and vegetables daily, especially the ones high in vitamin A.  Drink two quarts of water daily during the summer, which may include herbal teas and electrolyte beverages.  Include regular exercise and relaxation.  Use skin care that is paraben free, avoiding heavy makeup or products that can clog pores.

Ph Balanced Cleanser

In 3 ounces of pure aloe, add 1 tablespoon of witch hazel and 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin.  Stir and add:

                          1 drop of Rosemary

                        30 drops of Tangerine

                          1 drop of Patchouli

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting cap.  Use this combination 3 times daily to wash the face and neck.  Pat dry.  Store remaining blend in the refrigerator.  Note:  Make sure the glycerin is made from only vegetable sources.

Mask for Oily and Acne Prone Skin

In 2 tablespoons of wet clay, add the following essential oils:

                        6 drops of Tangerine

                        2 drops of Cypress

Mix well.  Apply immediately to the face and neck.  Relax for 10 minutes, then rinse skin thoroughly.  Pat dry.  Repeat once or twice weekly.  Note:  You can purchase green clay powder and add approximately 10 drops of pure water to each tablespoon.  Mix and add essential oils.  Do not use chemically fragranced wet clay.  It can cause irritation and eruptions.

Simple Tonic to Tighten Pores

Beat 1 egg white with a fork to mix well.  Add 3 drops of Tangerine essential oil.  Spread over a clean face and neck.  Allow to dry.  Rinse with cool water after several minutes.  Repeat 2 or 3 times weekly.

The Three Oranges Part 1

The Three Oranges      Part 1

The orange tree, Citrus aurantium, is the only plant that yields 3 essential oil and 1 absolute. I will discuss each in detail. First, let’s investigate the history of this unusual tree, Seville orange, or bitter orange.

Bitter orange trees were introduced to the Mediterranean in the tenth and eleventh century after Arab conquests. Europeans enjoyed the oranges for 500 years before other varieties of oranges were introduced.

By the 17th century, the Princess of Nerole, introduced the essential oil of orange blossoms to Italian society. It soon became fashionable to wear, bathe and fragrance gloves, clothes and stationary with the scent of orange blossom. The princess Anna Maria De La Tremoille was a member of the powerful Italian Orsini family who introduced the fragrance to the courts of Europe. The essential oil, Neroli, was named in her honor.

Neroli is the product of the steam distillation of the delicate orange blossoms of the Citrus aurantium tree. The blossoms are picked on a warm, sunny day as they begin to open. Steam distillation takes place immediately on the site before the fresh scent fades from the flower. One thousand pounds of blossoms will yield only 4 cups of essential oil at a very expensive price. The scent is light and fragrant with a hint of orange and a sweet, lasting undertone. It blends with most essential oils, except the heavier scents, such as vanilla. The best blends for Neroli are other citrus oils and floral scents. Neroli aroma is so delicate; it can easily be overwhelmed by a predominant scent, such as ginger and other spices or base oils.

Historically, Neroli has been popular in colognes, deodorants and body splashes. The essential oil can be diluted in 190 proof alcohol and bottled or filtered water today.

In 4 ounces of water;

add 1 teaspoon of 190 proof alcohol or witch hazel;

add 7 drops of Neroli;

Bottle in a dark glass container tightly capped for 1 hour. Turn the bottle twice to mix the contents. Open and sample the mixture.  Add up to 3 more drops of Neroli to obtain the desired scent. Cap again and store away from light and heat.

Neroli can be purchased from the essential oil of the Citrus bigaradia, bitter orange, or Citrus aurantium, sweet orange. Citrus aurantium is more available at a less expensive price. Both are heavenly scents with remarkable healing qualities.

Neroli’s principle healing action affects the nervous system. It is a natural tranquilizer effecting anxiety, depression, nervous exhaustion, and tension. Neroli encourages us to experience life challenges with calmness and joy, offering hope to the hopeless. The soothing effect reduces insomnia and nervous headaches. Inhaling the essential oil or enjoying it in a message helps to regulate heart arrhythmias and relieve nervous tics.

In skincare, Neroli assists every skin type. The oil is nontoxic, nonphototoxic, and nonsensitizing on the skin. It is beneficial for inflamed and sensitive skin. I use it for small, broken vessels diluted in jojoba oil or combined in a cream. Neroli assists in new cell regeneration and is safe for aging skin.

To reduce premenstrual pain and cramping, Neroli can be taken as a bath 7 days before the onset of menses. Add 10 drops of the essential oil in 2 tablespoons of honey or cream to a warm bath. Soak 15 to 20 minutes.

Neroli and other citrus essential oils are best stored in the refrigerator. Bottle the essential oils in small, glass containers, tightly capped. Citrus oils can quickly become flat when exposed to oxidation and temperature changes.

In perfumery and aromatherapy, Neroli is a heart note. It holds a blend together, giving the aroma definition and coherence. Heart notes are middle notes, building on the foundation of base notes, such as vanilla, vetiver, frankincense, myrrhand, and sandalwood. Floral and rose oils are middle notes that carry the message of the blend. Heart notes are very passionate, even erotic aromas, hat keep your attention and connect with the complexity of your personality. The heart center will open and unfold like a thousand petal flower. The sensation is deep and lingering. While the base notes hold the perfume or blend the heart notes take you on a journey, releasing endorphins from the depths of your soul.

Aromatherapy and perfumery builds blends using base, heart and top notes. These are determined by the volatility of the essential oil or, how fast it lifts into the air. The base notes are grounding and “fix” the blend so it releases over a longer period of time. Heart notes initiate intimacy within and with others. They are warming, loving, and transforming. Top notes reach out to great us on an aromatic journey. They are the first scent we smell, establishing an initial aroma before dissipating. Top notes are uncomplicated and sociable. enticing the recipient to begin an aroma journey. As the initial scent dissipates, an unfolding movement of scent begins. True healing occurs as the psyche releases unproductive thoughts and actions to discover self-actualization. Our goal is to participate fully in life’s journey.

I decided to use neroli for grieving clients. Grief is a shock to the psyche that is at first numbing and works into confusion, insomnia, and acute feelings of loss. Grief Aroma Health blend helped my clients with worry and grief.

Neroli blends well with lavender rose geranium, ylang ylang, jasmine, clary sage, and other citrus oils. A vial of Grief Aroma Health blend can be carried and sniffed throughout the day and night or misted using our 2-ounce spray.

Compassion Blend

In a 1 dram, 3.7 milliliter, dark bottle combine

        7 drops Neroli

        3 drops Ylang Ylang

2 drops Rose otto (steam distilled)

Fill the bottle with 190 proof alcohol or distilled water. Cap tightly and cure for one hour.

The Queen of Hearts- Blog 20

Roses date over 5,000 years to ancient origins in China and Persia. They are cultivated today in Turkey, Russia, and Bulgaria, India, southern France, and Italy. The rose family has opened and healed more hearts than a surgeon. The mirrors unconditional love, forgiveness, and empathy, while encouraging every admirer to aspire towards perfection. Roses fulfill an inner desire for completeness. Every part of the rose is beautiful, fragrant, graceful or strong. Thorns are listed as strong!

What cannot be said with words, the fragrant shape and color of this flower communicates effectively. The rose washes away grief to offer hope, calms the dying to prepare for eternity, offers joy to replace depression and emotional pain, celebrates the innocence of a newborn, and opens the heart to attract love.

Only a few rose species produce rose oil. Rosa damascene is cultivated in Bulgaria. The country is practically a rose plantation. Damask rose is the species, which initiated fragrance in other species associated with the heady rose scent.  I grow autumn damask, believed to be the variety that was used to graft and develop new species beautiful fragrant roses, such as the Bourbons. Damask roses are now cultivated in Tunisia and Morocco, yielding a more delicate scented essential oil than the popular Bulgarian rose oil. Equally beautiful damask rose is cultivated in India, Russia, and China.

Rose centifolia, from the cabbage rose, originated in Persia. It is now primarily cultivated in Egypt. I love growing cabbage old roses. Hey adapt to southern weather patterns and light up every garden with magnificent blooms.

Rose gallica originated in the Caucasus. Today, it is also cultivated in Turkey. Turkish rose essential oil is considered strong and sometimes undesirable for aromatherapy. I like it. Add a drop or two to blends that lack passion and richness. Obtain samples of all the different roses to choose your favorite, or enjoy all of them!

To choose rose oil for aromatherapy, learn the different adjectives that describe them. Rose otto or rose attar describes steam distilled rose oil. Most otto has a very light aroma, sometimes lost, or overwhelmed in a blend. The very narcotic or heady scent of a rose is an absolute. Rose absolute is a solvent extracted by alcohol or hexane. It is preferred for perfumes and may be a very thick or semi liquid oil. The alcohol or the hexane is removed before the final product is offered. Rose otto is also separated from its hydro late with hexane, which is later removed. A concrete is an extraction using hexane, yielding a semi solid wax. Concretes are used in solid perfumes and to extend the rose scent more economically in aromatic blends. Concretes have a much softer scent than absolutes and yield a subtle fragrance. Absolutes of any rose are more expensive. Five thousand pounds of roses only produce one pound of oil. Any true rose oil is expensive. Rose oils can be adulterated with chemical scents, so take the time to research the source. Rose oil is the most exquisite heart note in aromatherapy and blends with every aroma. It is truly worth the investment.

If you cannot afford rose oil, consider growing old roses with the most perfume. Cabbage roses, Rosa centifolia, and moss roses have the finest perfume scent, and the most dramatic flowers. Moss roses, Rosa centifolia mucosa, have whiskers covering the stems and calyx. The flowers of both sub species are full, double cupped roses with various shades of pink or white petals. There is a striped moss with many shades of pink and red markings that remind me of candy cane. The striped moss makes an ideal potted plant. Alfred de Dalmas is another small moss rose with creamy pink petals and whiskers. Both have unknown parentage, except they are related to gallica roses. Madame Louis Levique is known for perfect: large silky soft, deep pink flowers, which exude a fragrance to challenge the most talented perfumer. These are a few examples of old roses to be grown for pleasure and fragrance. They make a fine rose water to rinse your hair and apply to your skin.

Before studying the many medicinal effects of roses, let’s focus on pleasure. Rose combines with many oils, including jasmine, neroli, orange, geranium, lavender, vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood, chamomile, clary sage, rosewood, tonka bean, Peru balsam, and Ylang ylang extra. Tonka bean has an almost caramel scent. Peru balsam has a very light vanilla odor. Neither of these lesser-known scents will overpower a blend. If you do not enjoy the scent of rose oil, a few drops may be added to a blend to add warmth and richness. In the following blends, use a rose oil of your choice.

The Lady loves Roses perfume

In 3.7 ml. (1 dram) brown bottle,

Combine:          10 drops Rose

                        5 drops Ylang ylang extra

                        5 drops Neroli

            *          3 drops Peru balsam or 2 drops Sandalwood

Fill the bottle with either jojoba oil or 190 proof alcohol. Cap tightly and store 1 to 2 weeks in a cool, dark place. Apply to the neck or base of the throat.

*Note: Peru balsam is a resinous material. It dissolves easily in 190 proof alcohol. The consistency and color is like molasses. Each “drop” can be extracted from the bottle with a crochet hook. One drop will dissolve in ½ teaspoon of alcohol. Added to jojoba oil, it will fizz momentarily. The scent will not over power a blend like vanilla essential oil, which has a liquor aroma. Peru balsam is a base note in aromatherapy, acting as a fixative in a blend.

Man’s Best Friend perfume

Combine:          5 drops Rose

5 drops Jasmine (Sambuca or Grandiflorum)

Roses have been successfully used for many centuries. Rose oil has a harmonizing effect on the psyche and moods. It balances the emotions and regulates overactive emotional responses. If the emotional nature is oversensitive or non- responsive, rose oil brings into balance. Rose oil acts as a relaxing tonic, reducing many complaints.

Rose is known to reduce skin outbreaks. A pure rose oil or absolute is applied topically to shingles twice daily undiluted. The aroma will also reduce tension.

I use rose oil in 84 blends in private practice and as complimentary therapy in hospitals. The blends reduce many symptoms, as well as keeping maternity patients balanced and happy as they await a joyous arrival. Rose oil blends well with any essential oils without overpowering a blend. I used rose oil to anoint my mother as she passed to the other side. The Language of Love- Blog 22

The Language of Love- Blog 22

Lovers have used the aroma of lavender for centuries to express the innocence and pure intentions of love. Women are especially drawn to the clean scent of lavender. They enjoy it in cologne, cosmetics, household cleaners and laundry. Lavender is a to scent linen and spray, or diffuse in a room. Lavender is the most used essential oil, most beneficial and least toxic.

Lavandula officinalis is native to Iraq and southern France, growing in mountainous terrain. This is the wild species, growing on steep slopes in rocky soil. The wild mountain variety has many hybrid species. The most popular is Lavandula angustifolia, a lager plant producing more blooms and essential oil. The original, wild lavender is not commercially grown because each plant must be cut individually by hand and carried to the valley to be distilled. Horticulturist crossed L. officinalis and L. angustifolia with a native Spanish L. latifolia to produce lavendin, the variety that is grown commercially today.

Lavendin can be grown in lower altitudes in large fields. Harvesting can be done by machine. The long spikes of blue flowers produce an abundant supply of essential oil that keeps the price reasonable. Lavendin is sterile, producing no seed for reproduction. A clone, Lavendin grosso, is the preferred lavender for commercial growing. Grosso grows as tall as a 6-foot man or women, with floral, blue spikes reaching for the sky. These varieties do not produce the most healing essential oil. Most is diluted and sold as inexpensive bath oil, and cleaning products.

Aromatherapists and natural perfumers use Lavandula officinalis and angustifolia only. These are less likely to be diluted and have an exquisite aroma. These varieties have over 160 healing properties that successfully treat a long list of complaints. The cost is affordable, especially considering the list of benefits L. officinalis has an aroma that restores the nerves and stimulates the body’s defenses. In medieval times, L. officinalis was believed to produce and maintain purity and character. To offer someone lavender was to offer love in its purest form.

The word Lavandula is derived from the Latin root, “lavare”, which means to wash. Lavender is both deodorizing and detoxifying. I use the hydrolate as a natural deodorant. The natural cleansing properties treat external ulcers, boils, abscesses, and wounds. Lavender is one of the few essential oils, which can be worn undiluted. It has antiseptic qualities to disinfect the wound, and pain relieving properties as a nervine. Lavender stimulates white blood cell production that rush to the site, remove toxins, and bacteria.

Lavender is also the best treatment for burns and subsequent scarring. Saturating a burn in lavender oil will relieve pain and greatly increase healing. It can also be diluted in aloe gel as a carrier.

Burn Formula

In 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel add:

6 drops L. officinalis

Stir several times before applying directly to a burn. Repeat several times daily until the wound heals. Store any leftover in a dark glass bottle and screw cap. Refrigerate.

It is a well-known story that I restored 50% of my youngest son’s hearing in 3 weeks using lavender oil. He has since heard everything he wants! Use the following formula for earaches. Do not allow the dilution to get inside the ear canal. The application relaxes people.

Ear Oil

In 1-teaspoon olive oil or St. John’s Wort oil add:

2 drops L. officinalis

Apply to the front of the outside ear and down to the side of the neck. One drop of the dilution may also be put on a cotton ball and loosely applied to the inside of the ear.

The most important therapeutic effect of lavender is on the heart. Lavender strengthens the heart by lowering blood pressure when necessary and calming arrhythmias, racing heartbeats, and nervous lovers. Let’s start and end this session with the language lovers comprehend: calming and uplifting blends for massage and stress reduction. As the heart is supported and strengthened, love will rush in.

6 drops Jasmine (sambuc is very sensual)

The Great Harmonizer- Blog 23

The Great Harmonizer- Blog 23

Lavender is one of the best essential oils for harmonizing a blend, a perfume, or a treatment. The scent can neutralize an odorous blend that is overpowering. Small amounts of lavender can also be added to a perfume blend that is very sweet or floral. A few drops of lavender will produce a calming, yet refreshing addition to the blend.

Once the combination is applied the aroma will blend with the individual’s body chemistry, releasing a unique odor. A blend will smell different on every person. If you are preparing a blend for another person, the blend can be tested with perfume blotters. These are small strips inserted into the blend, after each additional oil. Smell the strip immediately and every 15 minutes afterwards for up to one hour. This will allow the potency to be adjusted and the true scent to ripen. Once the aromas are completed, allow the scent to cure up to 3 days before applying. It will be fun to smell the blend every day to observe how it changes. Keep a notebook of every blend, the number of drops of each essential oil, and how the smell affects you. When the receipt wears the aroma, note how he or she is affected by the smell and what feelings or memories it evokes.

If you are making a blend to wear, apply a drop on your skin and observe the scent and affects after each essential oil. You can use perfume blotters if you prefer. Perfume blotters may work best with an alcohol base, like a perfume. When preparing an alcohol base perfume or cologne, allow the completed blend to cure for up to a month, noting observations on a daily, or weekly basis. A perfume can transform totally overnight. It is exciting to create an alchemical process. Notes and observations will aid maturation of your skills as an aromatherapist.

Lavender heals many skin problems. It is antiseptic, astringent, and deep cleansing. The balancing effect treats dry skin and acne. Like rose, lavender benefits every skin type. The oil stimulates lymphatic drainage to reduce toxic impurities metabolized by the skin. This increases new cell growth for hair, scalp, and skin. Add lavender in a hair rinse and it reduces hair loss. Use lavender to treat eczema and psoriasis combined with pure lemon balm essential oil. It is safe to use on diabetic skin ulcers and boils. Wear lavender undiluted for stings and insect bites.

The following combination treats soft tissue skin problems, including eczema and psoriasis. Always skin test a small area prior to treating the entire surface.

Lavender has been used for cystitis and urinary symptoms for at least 200 years. It works well with juniper essential oil in a sitz bath to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. An easy preparation is to make the following bath salt recipe.

Lavender Bath Salts

In a 16-ounce glass jar, add:

6 ounces Epsom salts

2 ounces sea salt

Mix thoroughly and add:

40 drops of L. officinalis

10 drops Juniper, Juniperus communis

2 drops Cedarwood, Cedrus atlantica

4 drops Sandalwood

Cap tightly. Sore in a cool cabinet or closet. Allow to cure 7 to 10 days before adding 4 ounces to a warm, drawn bath. Note: Not recommended for children. Consult a physician immediately if fever occurs with any urinary symptoms.

I have used the lavendula officinalis, I grow, for over 10 years in hospitals in combination with Petite Fleur essences and other essential oils for nausea, and side effects of chemotherapy. It is important to begin wearing the blend before chemotherapy starts, so the individual will not correlate lavender with the side effects of chemotherapy.

Nausea during pregnancy is treated individually. Although lavender reduces nausea and motion sickness, it does not always help pregnant women. Each expectant mother must find the aroma to help her. Usually it is some bizarre aroma, such as eucalyptus. However, lemon is a good guess. Some moms to be prefer no aromas. Moms rule. When baby arrives, essential oils are not recommended for children under 18 months. Lavender is not recommended for male children.

To reduce insomnia and encourage a good night sleep, have a lavender foot and body massage. Sleep with the angels!

The First Aid Tree

The First Aid Tree

Tea tree, also Ti tree, has effectively been used for thousands of years to treat wound care by the Australian Aborigines.  Melaleuca began its ascent into the western world during World War II.  It was included in every soldier’s first aid kit who was fighting the Pacific front.  Like the Aborigines, soldiers crushed the leaves and applied them to wounds and skin conditions.  By the early 1960’s, American studies proved Tea tree as an effective treatment for trichomonas infection as pessaries or a bath.  Soon Tea tree gained international fame as a germicidal and immune stimulant.

There are three Melaleuca varieties that are medicinal.  Melaleuca alternifolia is the most popular variety.  It is an Australian native tree.  Niaouli, Melaleuca viridiflora is also an Australian native.  This variety treats respiratory problems.  It is often used as steam inhalation.  Melaleuca leucodendron, known as the Cajeput tree, is also used for respiratory illness.  It grows in the Phillipines and Indonesia.

Tea tree essential oil is extracted by steam distillation.  The twigs and, most of all the leaves produce this very potent oil.  Melaleuca oil is a clear or slightly yellow liquid.  The odor is very high in intensity.  The camphorous odor is pungent and very medicinal smelling.  It makes my eyes water!  However, the oil is nontoxic and usually nonirritant to the skin.  It is an unforgettable odor.

The Alternifolia variety is the smallest tree of the Melaleucas.  It may pass as a shrub, with needle-like leaves.  Flowers are yellow or purple without a stalk.  The flower heads appear at the end of the needles.

Melaleuca cajeput is a tall, evergreen, growing 100 feet into the heavens.  The leaves are thick, flat and pointed.  The bark is thick and spongy to touch.  The tree bears white, feathery flowers.  Oil extracted from the leaves and twigs produces a slightly green, milder essential oil.  The green color is due to traces of the mineral, copper, in the tree.  Compared to eucalyptus, the scent is milder, with a slightly fruity odor.  All varieties may be applied alone and undiluted for some treatments.  However, my experience is that Melaleuca is even more beneficial when combined with other oils, such as thyme, eucalyptus, clove bud, pine, rosemary and lemon.  Melaleuca is generally tolerated, which makes the oil more valuable as a cure-all in aromatherapy.

Melaleuca has skin protective properties. This blend may be used topically, .  Please seek medical help whenever infection is present.

REGENERATION, Part II

REGENERATION, Part II

Cedarwood’s antiseptic, astringent actions benefits oily skin, acne, oily hair, dandruff and reduces hair loss.  The following blends treat and regenerate the skin and hair.

Balancing Oily Skin

In 1 ounce of aloevera gel, add the following essential oils:

                        2 drops of Cedarwood

                        2 drops Lemongrass

                        8 drops of Geranium

                        2 drops of Rosemary

Allow to cure 3 hours before applying to clean skin twice daily with a cotton ball.  Do not rinse.  Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.

Toner for Acne-prone Skin

In 4 ounces of witch hazel, available at pharmacies, add the following essential oils:

                          4 drops of Cedarwood

                          2 drops pf Tea Tree

                          3 drops of Eucalyptus

10 drops of Lemon Verbena, Lippia Citriodora

                          1 drop of Thyme

Allow to cure overnight.  Turn the bottle over to mix the oils.  Apply to clean skin with a cotton ball 2 or 3 times daily.  Store in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Store in the refrigerator.

Hair Care for an Oily Scalp

In 8 ounces of non fragrant shampoo, add the following essential oils:

                          6 drops of Cedarwood

4 drops of Swiss Pine, Pinus cembra

                          4 drops of Sage

                          2 drops of Cypress

                        16 drops of Lemongrass

Allow to cure overnight.  Shampoo hair and scrub the scalp vigorously.  Let the shampoo penetrate the scalp 3 to 5 minutes before carefully rinsing all the suds from the hair and scalp.  Repeat every other day until the scalp normalizes.  Then shampoo twice a week.  I recommend shampoo without sodium laurel sulfate.  Consider balancing the diet with more fruits and vegetables and very little fats and fried food.

Dandruff Shampoo for an Oily Scalp

Make the blend above and add

                        10 drops of Lavendula

                          2 drops of Tea Tree

Follow directions for oily hair care.

Consider adding essential fatty acids to the diet from 3 ounces of salmon or 1 tablespoon of flaxseed or borage oil.  I recommend cooking whole flaxseed in 1 cup of water for 3 to 5 minutes and drinking the tea.  Flaxseed becomes rancid immediately after oxygen combines with it.  Refrigerate any unused seeds.

Hair Loss Blend

In 1 ounce of jojoba oil add the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Rosemary

                          2 drops of Lemongrass

2 drops of Swiss Pine, Pinus cembra

                          4 drops of Coriander seed

Allow to cure 3 hours.  Massage gently onto the scalp where hair loss is occurring every night or 30 minutes before shampooing the hair.  Bottle in dark glass with a tight- fitting screw cap.

Another property of Cedarwood essential oil is helping a circulation. This property makes it an excellent addition for an arthritis and rheumatic blend.  Circulation to the muscles is especially increased, enhancing joint muscle integrity.  Blends can be made into compress or massage aromas.  Cedarwood tonifies where there is weakness.  The following blends are warming, comforting and uplifting.

Enhancing Blend

For Muscles and Joints

In 4 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                          6 drops of Cedarwood

                        10 drops of Cinnamon leaf

                          2 drops of Ginger Root

                          3 drops of Cypress

                          5 drops of Juniper berries

Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Warm a few tablespoons in a cup or glass of hot  water 3 minutes before massaging onto joints and muscles.  Repeat twice daily for pain, or once daily to continue regeneration.

Relaxing Blend

For spasms and stiffness

In 4 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                          4 drops of Cedarwood

                        10 drops of Peppermint

                          6 drops of Eucalyptus

                          1 drop of Angelica Root

                          4 drops of Swiss Pine

2 drops of Nutmeg, Myristica Fragrans

                        10 drops of Orange

Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Massage several drops on affected area.  Add moist heat for several minutes to assist penetration.  Continue to apply the blend every night or every 4 to 6 hours, as needed to reduce symptoms.  Bottle remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Refrigerate.  Warm blend in a cup of hot water before using again.  Moist heat applications will assist this blend.

Cedarwood is an excellent aid to reduce skin problems. Those with reduced circulation, can also benefit from this blend.  Cedarwood is so strong, I recommend a very light touch in this dilution.  The amounts may be doubled in twice the amount of carrier oil.

In 1 ounce of jojoba oil, add the following essential oils.

                          1 drop of Cedarwood

                          2 drops of Sandalwood

                        10 drops of Lavendula

3 drops of Lemon balm (Melissa)

Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Swab the affected area with a sterile gauze.  Use a separate gauze for each area treated.  Repeat 2 times daily, always cleaning the affected area thoroughly before applying the blend.  It may take 10 to 21 days for healing and regeneration to occur.

Cedarwood can be used as an insect repellent for people and pets.  Fleas and ticks move another direction when they smell this balsamic odor.  Use it sparingly in dilution to avoid irritating the skin.  A dilution can be sprayed on a pet’s bed, in an outside setting or on the skin.  Although essential oils do not mix well in water, it is easily dispersed as a spray.  Turn the spray bottle over a few times to disperse the essential oils before misting.  Avoid the eyes or sensitive skin.

Cedar Insect Repellent

In a 4 ounce spray bottle, add the following essential oils:

                        4 drops of Cedarwood

                        6 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus

                        2 drops of Pine

                        6 drops of Rosemary

Fill the bottle with distilled water.  Allow to cure overnight before chasing the critters away.

Remember that Cedarwood is a base note.  It works as a fixative, holding down the blend so the aroma lifts slowly over time.  Use it sparingly, a few drops go a long way.

REGENERATION: The Tonifying Strength of Trees

REGENERATION: The Tonifying Strength of Trees

The majestic Mountain Cedar, Cedrus Labani, produced one of the earliest essential oils.  Ancient Egyptians prized the oil for perfumes, cosmetics and mummification, in that order!  Ships, furniture and coffins were made from the majestic forests of the Cedar of Lebanon.  Solomon’s temple was built from cedar wood and Noah was said to burn cedar wood as an offer of thanksgiving for surviving the great flood.  The tree, standing 100 feet tall, was perceived as a symbol of strength and harmony.  These trees covered Lebanon and part of southern Turkey, averaging between 1,000 and 2,000 years old.  Today, only a few hundred remain, growing in altitudes between 4,000 and 6,000 feet.  The forests were once believed to be holy, reaching into the heavens and filling the air with a sweet, balsam scent.

Today, aroma therapists prefer the oil from the Atlas cedar, growing in North Africa.  Other cedar oil is made from Juniperus virginiana, the red cedar, related to the thujene tree.

The oil is distilled from wood chips and sawdust.  Steam distillation produces a thick, viscous, honey-colored oil.  Thirty pounds of wood produces one pound of oil.  The scent is reminiscent of pencil wood.  I can remember going to school needing only one of these cedarwood pencils and a Big Chief tablet!  The aroma of cedarwood encourages a strong sense of identity and memories of simpler times.

Cedarwood essential oil also encourages deep breathing.  Cedrol, a main ingredient, is a restorative for the bronchioles.  It is especially indicated for excessive mucus and bronchial congestion.  It is beneficial in an aroma lamp or diluted in a carrier oil in small doses.

Bronchial Ease

In 1 ounce of jojoba carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                          2 drops of Cedarwood

                        10 drops of Frankincense

                          1 drop of Sage

Bottle in dark glass with a tight- fitting screw cap.  Cure 3 hours or overnight.  Massage several drops on the chest and upper back 3 times daily until cough and tightness abates.

Cedarwood may also be used in steam inhalation.  Boil 6 cups of water in a 4- quart pot.  Remove from heat.  Add 4 drops of Cedarwood and tent with a towel or stand close to the steam for inhalation.  Two drops of lemongrass and 1 drop of sage may be added to the water, if desired, to facilitate the cedarwood.

Cedarwood is very tonic and restorative to the nervous system.  It is an excellent treatment for those suffering from nervousness, stress and sadness.  The oil lifts fatigue resulting from constant tension.  Use it in baths, steam inhalation and massage.  I recommend warmed sesame oil as a carrier because it is also soothing and regenerative to the nervous system.

Comforting and Centering Massage

In 2 ounces of warm sesame oil, add the following essential oils:

                          5 drops of Cedarwood

                        10 drops of Sandalwood

                        16 drops of Bergamot

1 drop of Cypress, Cupressus sempervirens

Blend well and massage liberally over the entire body, moving down the back, up the legs and arms toward the heart and in a circular motion on the chest and abdomen.  Clockwise motion is best.  Massage each toe and work the oil into the bottom of the feet.  Cover the feet with socks and keep the recipient comfortably warm with a sheet or robe.  This is a delicious blend that may be used regularly, increasing water intake to assist lymphatic drainage.

Bottle leftover blend in dark glass with a tight- fitting screw cap.  Store in a cool, dark place.

Cedarwood also has soothing properties.  It is an excellent enhancement for the kidney and bladder.

Irritation of the lining of the bladder causes a chronic condition aggravated by tight fitting slacks, pantyhose, certain food and environmental stresses, intercourse and hormonal changes.  Sugar, caffeine and alcohol may contribute to food and hormonal stress.  Use cedarwood in a bath, compress or massage oil for soothing the abdomen.

NOTE:  Cedar Oil should not be used during pregnancy, as it may have an abortive effect.

 Better bladder blend

In 1 ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                                      4 drops of Cedarwood

                                    10 drops of Lavandula

                                      2 drops of Yarrow

                                      6 drops of Rockrose

Combine well and massage the abdomen and pelvis 3 or 4 times daily.  A warm compress may be applied each time. Irritation can spread into the kidneys and ureters, leading to scarring or infection.

This blend may be diluted in a sitz bath, deleting the carrier oil, for 15 to 20 minutes daily.  The same amounts may be applied as a compress.  Saturate a clean hand towel in 4 cups of warm water containing the essential oils.  Squeeze most of the moisture out and apply to the abdomen until the cloth cools.  Repeat several times daily as desired.

Kidney and Bladder Support

In 1 ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        4 drops of Cedarwood

                        6 drops of Juniper berries

                        2 drops of Yarrow

                        4 drops of Eucalyptus

                        6 drops of Orange

                        1 drop of Tea Tree

Bottle in dark glass overnight.  Massage the entire abdomen and the lumbar, lower back 3 times daily.  Drink 2 quarts of liquid, mostly water, daily.  If infection is probable, see a health care practitioner.  Chronic kidney infections can damage the kidneys severely.  Seek medical help if blood or pus passes in the urine.

Store leftover blend in a cool, dark place.
