Turmeric, Curcuma longa, essential oil, is an ancient Indian herb used as an anti-inflammatory, especially affecting joint discomfort. It is related to ginger. The herb has been involved in many studies, but both the herb and the essential oil need definitive documentation to utilize the proposed benefits and doses for administration. The essential oil does not contain curcuminoids, contained in the root and researched as an anti-inflammatory, good for joint health.

Turmeric should be avoided if liver, bile duct or kidney disease is involved. People with high bleeding time avoid turmeric. It can thin the blood.

The essential oil should be avoided by pregnant and nursing mothers until further studies are completed. Using the herb in food preparation is acceptable.

The fragrance is earthy, woody and a little spicy. The aroma is very strong by itself. It blends well with ginger and patchouli, which compete with the strong odor.  The essential oil is steam distilled from the roots.
