Peppermint essential oil has been used since ancient Egyptian times for enhancing digestion, alertness and reducing spasms. It continues to be home remedy. The main property is menthol, which works as a counterirritant. The sensation produced is first cool, then warm, distracting the feelings of aches when applied topically.
The refreshing smell of peppermint can enhance better breathing, mental alertness and calm nervousness.
Peppermint blends well with Lemon, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Pink Grapefruit, Rosemary and Spearmint. Peppermint will always dominate a blend, although Eucalyptus competes very intensely . Peppermint is an excellent therapeutic essential oil. Never use it in a perfume blend. One little drop and all you will smell is Peppermint.
Counterindicated on broken skin and children. Pregnant and nursing mothers should use peppermint with a HealthCare's permission in low doses. Avoid the eyes and delicate skin.
Pulegone in peppermint is listed by WHO as cancer causing. Consider using terpene free peppermint. Preliminary studies suggest menthol in cigarettes can make cigarettes more addictive with poor effects on the lungs.
Peppermint essential oil is regarded safe as flavorings in commercial products and certain over the counter anti-itching products.
