Medieval Aromatherapy Revisited

Medieval Aromatherapy Revisited

As Europe blossomed from the Dark Ages, many aromatic herbs and their essential oils were rediscovered.  Much of the knowledge of distillation, extraction and medicinal properties taught by Greek and Roman physicians was lost, only to be reintroduced by Islamic physicians and alchemists linking their ancient art to the modern world of science.

Herb gardens flourished in the later 1500’s at every commoner’s home.  Aromatic herbs were grown for strewing, cooking, home remedies and many household uses.  These herbs and their fragrant waters were often worn to cover the smell of unwashed bodies.  Bathing was considered unhealthy for the skin and general condition of the body.  Incense and strewing herbs helped during church and public gatherings, but very intimate encounters required special considerations.  Soon lovers developed a language of flowering herbs from the heavenly scents masking their personal odors.

A particular favorite was sweet Marjoram, Marjorana hortensis, believed to enhance marital bliss.  It was worn in nosegays, sweet powders and washing waters to perfume clothing.  Sprigs were hung outside a maiden’s window to attract a good husband….or announce availability.  Finger bowls were scented with marjoram and other sweet smelling herbs from the garden by floating them in the water bowls.  Guests would dip their fingers at the end of the meal, having used their fingers as utensils.  The following medieval recipe can be modified today for an aromatic sweet washing water for rinsing linens or fingers after a picnic.  Soapwort is used as a safe detergent.

Medieval Sweet Marjoram Water

Simmer 2 ounces of Soapwort, Saponaria officinalis, roots, stems and fresh leaves in 2 cups of pure water for 5 minutes.  Add 4 ounces of fresh marjoram, cover, remove from heat.  Allow the herbs to steep until cool, 20 to 30 minutes.  Strain, squeezing the liquid from the plant materials.  Use to wash linens or undergarments.  This recipe can be used on a picnic to clean fingers and hands before and after eating.

Alternate recipe:  Prepare and simmer soapwort.  Cover and allow to cool.  Strain liquid.  Add 4 drops of marjoram essential oil.  Use for clothes or a body wash.

The aroma of marjoram essential oil is slightly spicy and warming.  The scent is relaxing and calming, useful for anxiety, insomnia and crankiness.  Medieval Europeans often ground dried marjoram with a talc powder.  The following recipe is safe on the body or dusted on clothes in Medieval manner.  Cornstarch and/or arrowroot can be substituted for orris and calamus root.  Marjoram essential oil can be substituted for ground marjoram.

Medieval Talc Powder

1 pound ground orris root, Florentine Iris root

                        1 pound ground calamus root

                        1 ounce ground, dried marjoram

¼ pound dried lavender flowers or rose petals

1/8 teaspoon of ground clove buds is optional

Combine in an airtight container.  Allow the aromas to combine for 1 week before using.  Stores up to 1 year in an airtight container.

Substitute 10 drops of marjoram essential oil for dried marjoram; 6 drops of rose absolute or 18 drops of lavender absolute or essential oil.

Marjoram is a native of Mediterranean cultures, used medicinally for many centuries.  The essential oil is steam distilled from soft woody branches in bloom.  In Texas, marjoram and its cousin, oregano vulgare, blooms profusely in mid- summer.  Mine is blooming now, a mid-summer treat!  The calming aroma has been used to treat grief and sorrow in Medieval times, and nervous distress.  Modern aromatherapists use sweet marjoram in a relaxing aroma blend.

Relaxing Blend

In 4 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        20 drops Sweet Marjoram

                        20 drops Bergamot

                        10 drops Geranium

                        14 drops Rosewood

                        10 drops Lavandula

Bottle in dark glass with a tight- fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure overnight.  Massage the back, chest, abdomen, and limbs with long, relaxing strokes every evening or as desired.

Marjoram, of every variety, was enjoyed and used medicinally by the ancient Greeks.  Sweet marjoram was employed to prevent sinus headaches and migraines.  By enhancing cardiovascular flow, it is especially beneficial for stimulating the parasympathetic response and unblocking sympathetic nerve response.  Marjoram has the ability to remove energy blockages in the most non offensive ways. I like to add a drop or two of lemon, or lemongrass, to accentuate the power of this favorite Medieval herb.  Cold pressed lemon essential oil will give the blend a tarter flavor without the stimulation of the energy in lemongrass .  A few drops daily is safe.

Nasal and Bronchial Blend

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        20 drops Sweet Marjoram

                          5 drops Lemon

                          3 drops Rosemary

Bottle in dark glass with a screw cap.  Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Refrigerate until ready to use.  Apply a few drops to affected area and massage gently.  Allow marjoram to relax and expand your vital organs and energy pathways.

One effect marjoram has which is notable.  Marjoram is so calming it reduces sexual excitement.  It is known as anaphrodisiac.  Save a blend to use after physical exertion.  Marjoram is a subtle, but powerful muscle relaxer.  Marjoram is not used for infants. Not for use during pregnancy or lactation. during pregnancy.

Indian Lemon, a Delightful Summer Aroma

Indian Lemon, a Delightful Summer Aroma

The lemon tree is a native of India.  Citrus limonum was brought to Europe in the twelfth century with returning Crusaders.  Today, it is cultivated in Sicily, Italy; Florida and California in the United States.  It is a member of the rue family of plants.  The tree reaches 15 to 17 feet in height, producing white blossoms, singly or in pairs.  It blossoms and produces fruit year round.  One tree yields 200 pounds of lemons, in varying degrees of ripeness, producing one pound of pure essential oil in a good year.  The essential oil is extracted from mostly green fruit rinds in a cold pressed process.  Modern extraction uses machines to express the oil and separates it in a centrifuge.  Originally, the skin was pressed by hand into a sponge, a very laborious process.

The lemon tree traveled from Arabia to reach Sicily in the twelfth century.  The white, star-shaped flowers are named Zagara, the original Arab name.  Sicilians also cultivate citrus medica, a cultivar with deep green, thick-skinned lemons, much more sour than Citrus limonum.  The peel is commercially used to manufacture candied lemon peel, available at Christmas to make fruit cake and baked goods.  An essential oil of Citrus medica is expensive and rare, releasing a rich and fresh, fruity fragrance.  Both essential oils are best used within eight months of extraction.  Sicilian essential oil has a reputation for producing the finest essential oil.

Locating unadulterated lemon oil is a delicate matter.  The highly aromatic lemon oil has a compound from an isopren added to produce the clean fresh smell, citral.  Citral is one of many components of natural lemon oil. It is synthetically manufactured, or produced from less expensive essential oils, such as lemon grass and litsea cubeba.  It is very easy to adulterate lemon essential oil.  Citral, from other sources, such as lemon grass and litsea cubeba, cannot be detected with gas chromatograph.

Food grade lemon essential oil is separated from its natural wax by cooling the essential oil to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.  The oil is commercially used in many foods, drinks and cosmetics.  Aroma therapists require all components of lemon oil present for therapeutic use.  True lemon oil has amazing properties when unaltered and organically grown.  The bulk of lemon and orange essential oils are produced from trees sprayed with pesticides.  Many aroma therapists prefer lemongrass and oils they can locate grown from organically treated plants.  For therapeutic use, locate lemon oil without citral and stabilizers to extend shelf life added.

Lemon essential oil stimulates mental alertness. The aroma activates the center of the hippocampus of the brain, enhancing memorization and reducing confusion.  Japanese researchers reported 54 percent enhanced typing skills when lemon oil was dispersed into the room.  Communication and intellectual skills are often improved with the use of lemon oil.

Soothing Immune Enhancer

In one ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        2 drops of Citrus Limonium

                        1 drop of Angelica root

5 drops of Hyssop, Hyssopus officialis

Bottle in dark glass with a tight- fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure three hours or overnight.  Apply one or two drops on the chest and/or throat.  Massage lightly.  Application may be repeated three times for seven days, or one time for twenty-one days.  Refrigerate leftover blend daily.

For Better Breathing

In one ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                          2 drops of Citrus Limonium

                        10 drops of Lavandula

                           5 drops of Roman chamomile

Bottle in dark glass with a tight- fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure three hours or overnight.  Massage five to seven drops on the chest or upper back one to three times daily.  The blend may be used as a preventative once daily or weekly.  Refrigerate leftovers daily.

For Insect Bites and Itchy Skin

In one quart, four cups of distilled water, add 2 drops of lemon oil.  Bathe the bites or itchy skin once or twice daily until symptoms disappear.  This should prevent insect bites from swelling and becoming infected.

A drop of lemon oil can be added to two ounces of unscented shampoo to reduce oily conditions of the hair.  To reduce oily skin and eruptions, add 1 drop of lemon oil to distilled water and mist the affected skin morning and night.

Lemon essential oil is phototoxic. Exposure of skin to sunlight or tanning beds should be limited to 12 hours after application of more than 2% of lemon oil in a blend.  A few drops of the oil in a one-ounce blend or dilution is safe for topical application.  I do not use lemon oil topically on children under ten years old.  Sensitivity and reactions can occur in rare instances.  Aerial diffusion in a room does not cause sun sensitivity, only topical use.  It is best to test a blend on a non-sensitive area of skin, when used topically, to be sure there is no sensitivity to lemon oil. Store all citrus oils in a cold location or refrigerate.

Geranium: Also Out of Africa- Blog 25

Geranium: Also Out of Africa- Blog 25

Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens, P. odorantissemum, is a native of South Africa. It was exported to France in the late seventeenth century where it was hybridized and distilled. The leaves and stems are distilled to produce essential oil when the small flowers begin to bloom. There are many verities of aromatic geraniums. Rose geranium produces the fragrant essential oil used in perfumes and aromatherapy. The essential oil is a light color with a hint of yellow and green. It has a rose scent with a tart smell. To me it lacks the richness of rose essential oil. Rose geranium is often substituted for rose essential oil in commercial products and perfumes. It is added as a rose extender. The price of rose geranium is very inexpensive compared to natural rose oil. We are so fortunate to have both essential oils available.

Initially, geranium oil was used as an insect repellent in aroma lamps. Women discovered the scent lifted their mood and enhanced their energy. Rose geranium is definitely useful in reducing depression. Colognes and products worn on the face and neck helped dispel depression. The following cologne can be used to relieve stress and lift depressed moods.

Old fashion Cologne

In 2 ounces perfume alcohol, 190 proof add:

15 drops Geranium

5 drops Bergamot

1 drop Rosewood

1 drop Patchouli

Bottle in dark glass with a screw top. Allow to cure 3 days or longer before applying the cologne on the throat and front of the neck.

Geranium became very popular as a skincare aid. It helps all skin types, because it balances the sebum secretion. Geranium’s antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties benefits acne prone skin.

The following recipe is a great facial steam for oily or acne prone skin. Use weekly for best results.

Facial Steam to correct Troubled Skin

In four cups of steaming hot water add:

20 drops Geranium

5 drops Cypress, Cupressus sempervirens

5 drops Lemongrass

6 drops German chamomile

1 drop Yarrow, Achillea millefolium

Tent head and face with a clean towel. Allow steam to penetrate the skin, but not burning the skin. A safe distance from the steaming bowl of aroma water is 1 foot from the face. Back away if the steam becomes intense. After a few seconds, return to the facial steam. Repeat the process up to 15 minutes. Pat dry and rinse with cold water to close the pores. Pat the face dry with a clean towel.

Geranium is a great choice for menopausal women. The scent has helped women through the heat flashes, moods, and hormonal changes associated with menarche. I find it also helps to open a new channel of creativity after the child bearing years. Women become active in new careers, community efforts, charities, and hobbies. Aromatherapy helps women find their direction, voice, and newfound strength. Here is a hair conditioner to strengthen dry hair and make it manageable. It helps thinning and encourages a happy feeling.

Good Hair Day Conditioner

In 4-ounce plastic pet container add:

2 ounces aloe vera gel

2 ounces jojoba oil

10 drops Geranium

10 drops Ylang ylang extra or absolute

2 drops Rosewood, Aniba rosaedora

4 drops Sandalwood

Cap and turn the bottle upside down to mix thoroughly. Allow to cure overnight or longer. Apply to hair after a thorough shampoo and rinse. Allow 3-5 minutes before rinsing with cool water. Towel dry and style. This conditioner may be applied daily to wet hair, washing only once or twice weekly, to treat dry hair. Use a shampoo without sodium laurel sulphate to prevent dryness.

If psoriasis of the scalp is a problem, apply this blend at night.

Psoriasis Blend

In 1-ounce jojoba oil, add:

5 drops Lavender

6 drops Immortelle

2 drops Geranium

2 drops Rockrose

Bottle in dark glass with a screw top. Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight. Massage small amounts on affected areas with the fingertips nightly.

Use only natural products on the hair and scalp. Avoid methylparaben in all hair and skincare products. Never go to bed angry or tense. Enjoy an aromatic bath before bedtime.

Bath Indulgence

Draw a warm, comfortable bath. Add the following essential oils in a cream base. Relax and let your troubles float away.

In 3 tablespoons of cream add:

10 drops Lavender

6 drops Geranium

Combine oils into the cream. Add the warm bath water, and swish your hands throughout the water. Climb in and enjoy! Relax 15 to 20 minutes and towel dry. Life will look much sweeter. Sleep will be great!

A good way to nurture mature skin is to apply a masque. An easy masque is made with egg white. Clay masque can be messy to assemble and drying to mature skin, depending on the ingredients and the essentials oils used. For those quick pick me up days, use this simple masque to tighten pores and leave a beautiful shine on the skin.

Mature and Sensitive Skin Treatment

In one tablespoon of egg white add:

2 drops Geranium

1 drop Frankincense

Clean face and neck thoroughly. Mix the egg white and essential oils. Using fingertips, apply the mixture to the face and neck. Reapply the rest of the mixture liberally. Allow to dry about 5 minutes. Rinse with cool water. Pat dry with a towel. Apply moisture.

Geranium is an excellent choice of oils to increase circulation and lymphatic flow in the abdominal area. The intestines have a large concentration of lymphatic tissue. The lymphs can build toxicity and cause bloating, constipation, and spasticity of the bowel. The following formula can be used occasionally or daily to enhance health and longevity.

Tummy Rub for Irritable Bowel or Constipation

In 4 ounces of carrier oil add:

5 drops Peppermint

10 drops Geranium

1 drop Ginger

8 drops Fennel

2 drops Angelica root

5 drops Coriander seed

Bottle in dark glass with a screw top. Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight. Apply several drops to the abdomen and massage in a circular motion. Breathe rhythmically and deeply. Rub for 5 minutes. Apply a warm, damp compress as desired. Avoid during pregnancy or heavy menses. Increase water intake to 64 ounces daily.

Next we will put our knowledge into practice making lotions for skin renewal.

Exotics Essential Oils Part 2; Blog 13

Exotics Part 2; Blog 13

Sandalwood (Santalum album) essential oil is steam distilled from the heartwood of the tree. My sore grade is the finest, perfume grade, essential oil, preferred by aroma therapist. It is also very expensive. Most sandalwood oil is Agmarked, a grade guaranteed to comply with Indian government standards.

The sandalwood tree is native throughout India. Southern India cultivates most of the heartwood used for aromatherapy. Mysore oil is used throughout Asian cultures for medicinal and spiritual qualities. It’s finest quality is to calm the mind and open the heart. The aromatic scent is long lasting, and woodsy. Sandalwood is a low note, or fixative for essential oil blends. It releases slowly over a long time, holding onto the other more volatile essential oils.

Men often choose Sandalwood as a fragrance. Its mysterious effect is both relaxing and erotic. Sandalwood has many properties and is famous as an aphrodisiac. The subtle effect of the scent is like androsterone, a component of the male hormone, testosterone. Apply two drops undiluted onto the throat.

As a spiritual fragrance, Sandalwood encourages enlightenment, the highest form of insight. The fragrance, used alone, enhances warmth and understanding, components of compassion. The scent can awaken the power of kundalini energy, transforming brainwaves to conform with cosmic energy. The spirit will soar to a crescendo of colorful light and sound, a totally unique experience, dropping the conscience awareness into the depth of the “beyond”.

In the body, Sandalwood treats cystitis and urinary tract infections. Add 7 drops to a warm bath and soak 15 to 20 minutes. Sandalwood is nontoxic and can be used in skincare to heal dry or weeping eczema. For bronchitis, dilute 3 drops of Sandalwood in one ounce of carrier oil and rub the dilution onto the chest. The same dilution may be rubbed onto the pelvis to reduce symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease. The most promising application of Sandalwood is to nurture the nervous system by application or inhalation. Sandalwood reduces anxiety, stress and aggressive behavior.  It promotes relaxation, quiet contemplation, and meditation.

Here is a blend for males only.

                                    Night Mood

In 3 ounces of jojoba carrier oil add:

5 drops of Sage (Salvia lavenduliflora) essential oil

10 drops of Sandalwood (Santalum album) essential oil

2 drops of Rose (Rosa damascene) essential oil

Use a dark a dark glass bottle to contain the fragrance. Cap tightly. Allow curing 3 hours before applying 4 drops to the neck and throat. Massage lightly.

Ylang ylang (Canangium odoration) is considered a feminine scent. The scent is intensely sweet and flowery. It is a native of the Philippines, excluding an erotic, tropical flavor, opposite and compatible with Sandalwood. The intense scent of Ylang ylang can be sedated with the addition of 2 drops of Sandalwood or citrus essential oils. Ylang ylang, like Jasmine is enhanced by dilution.

The scent and growing conditions of Ylang ylang accents its fascinating nature. The tree grows 66 feet tall with very large creamy flowers. However the flowers only develop their intensely fragrant scent when tended by a caring ad knowledgeable gardener. The tree responds to compassionate, human touch, by producing the most fragrant flower of any tree. Ylang ylang means flowers of flowers in Malayan.

Being an organic gardener, Ylang ylang’s unique growing conditions and nature is most interesting to me. In order to produce fragrant flowers, the tree must be trimmed on a regular basis, at least every two months. The branches naturally bend downward to allow large flowers to be harvested. Fall is the harvest time when the flowers are fragrant and contain essential oil. One hundred pounds of flowers produce nearly two pounds of essential oil from steam distillation. The flowers are harvested early in the morning and immediately distilled to produce an aromatic liquid.

Ylang ylang produces an endorphin effect from the brain. The fragrance may act as an aphrodisiac, analgesic, or antidepressant. Scent affects us individually, and Ylang ylang is a great example of a scent that restores calm and balance to one person and chases another recipient far away. The scent has more staying power than most essential oils, which dissipate quickly and loose their scent. Add 1 drop of Ylang ylang to a perfume or healing lotion to enhance its nature.

The essential oil of Ylang ylang is often added to cosmetics. The alluring scent has an unusual ability to relax facial muscles. Tension and aging seem to disappear as a blend is massaged into the face. The overly sweet smell of Ylang ylang is reduced with the addition of orange, neroli, lemongrass, grapefruit, or Sandalwood essential oils. Ylang ylang is most effective for oily skin. However, it benefits all skin types because it softens and rejuvenates the skin.  The phytohormones balances moisture in the skin as it releases facial tension.

                                    Soothing Facial Message

In 2 ounces of jojoba oil add the following essential oils. Allow to cure 1 to 3 hours before application. Slowly massage the face using an upward motion.

Eucalyptus, the herb of the Aborigines

Eucalyptus, the herb of the Aborigines

Eucalyptus, the blue gum tree, originated in Australia.  Today, it is also cultivated in India, California, North Africa, Egypt, and Spain, prized for its essential oil.  It is a member of the Myrtle family.  There are at least 50 species of eucalyptus trees, an interest to every Koala bear.  Only two species are used in aromatherapy, Eucalyptus globules and citriodora.  The first is known as blue gum, with round blue green leaves.  Citriodora is the Lemon eucalyptus, having pointed leaves with 85% citronellal, a bactericidal.  The latter is more cooling and antiseptic with a pleasant lemon scent.

Australian Aborigines used eucalyptus to combat malaria and fevers.  The tree absorbs large amounts of water from the earth.  Natives combated malaria by growing trees near standing stagnant water.  When this was later repeated in other parts of the world, the eucalyptus eradicated the incidence of malaria.

In the 1900’s the botanist, von Muller, introduced the essential oil to the Western world.  The Eucalyptus globulus, the oil glands are visible when held up to the light.  Steam distillation produced the essential oil.  Fifty pounds of leaves and branches yields one pound of essential oil.  The Citriodora produces a lemon yellow, clear oil with a delicious lemon-scent.

Eucalyptus is one of the most well-known essential oils.  It certainly has one of the strongest odors and cancels many lighter scents when blended.  I like to combine eucalyptus and peppermint to see which one dominates the blend.  Both are great antispasmodic pain relievers and work well together.  However, I always think I smell like a locker room when I wear a blend with peppermint and eucalyptus.

Eucalyptus is popular in topical treatments for arthritis and rheumatism.  When stiffness and lack of mobility is a symptom, this massage blend will work wonders.  I prefer Lemon eucalyptus in this blend because it moves and drives trapped energy and pain.

Oh, my aching back blend

In 2 ounces of olive oil, or a carrier oil of choice, add the following essential oils.

10 drops of Lemon eucalyptus (citriodora)

                          2 drops of Pine

                          2 drops of Cedarwood

                          6 drops of Peppermint

                          1 drop of Clove

Allow to cure 3 hours.  Apply warm to the back, knees and legs, massaging using small circular motions.  Follow with warm, moist heat, as desired.  Massage the feet with the blend as the recipient relaxes.  Repeat as desired.

Store remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap away from direct heat and bright light.

Eucalyptus is best known for its actions on the lungs, bronchial and throat.  It is a great remedy for coughs, colds, flu, bronchitis, asthma and upper respiratory infections.  As an inhalant, eucalyptus has been used to help tuberculosis patients.  I use it with chronic pulmonary disease patients.  The essential oil activates red blood cell function, carrying oxygen to every cell in the body.  Terpene is the natural occurring ingredient in eucalyptus that is very medicinal.  In synthetic and many commercial eucalyptus essential oils, terpene is removed.  The aroma is more fragrant, but less potent.  Check you source to make sure terpene is present.

When treating the lungs or asthma, eucalyptus is best diluted into a carrier oil.  Asthmatics may prefer aloe vera gel because it will feel cool on the skin.  Aloe is also detoxifying, even through the skin.  Others will benefit with jojoba or sweet almond oil.  The following blend will aid most upper respiratory problems for adults and teenagers.  Eucalyptus will help children more in an aroma lamp or by diffusing it into a room.

Lungs, Asthma, Colds and Flu Blend

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, combine the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus

                          6 drops of Rosemary

                          1 drop of Tea Tree

3 drops of Sweet Basil, Ocimum basilicum

Combine well or cure for 3 hours when possible.

Massage the upper back using large, circular motions.  Gently massage the chest, using small circular motions, with several drops of blend.  Cover the upper torso with an old t-shirt or pajama top.  Repeat every 2 or 4 hours, as needed to reduce symptoms.

Asthmatic attacks often occur when the blood sugar drops.  Make sure the recipient drinks and/or eats every 4 to 5 hours, except when sleeping.  Lifestyle habits should include a balanced dietary program.

Store any leftover blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.

Bronchitis may respond better to diffusion through an aroma lamp or room diffuser.  Eucalyptus may be used alone or in combination with pine, lavender, rosemary, Melissa, basil or lemon verbena.  Since eucalyptus overpowers lighter aromas, consider saving the lavender, Melissa and lemon verbena for other fragrant blends.  Eucalyptus alone is a powerful remedy for the lungs and bronchials.

Sinusitis is another problem eucalyptus will help.  It opens the sinuses to ensure proper drainage.  If there are pockets of infections, eucalyptus’ antibiotic properties can usually cure them.  I have used blends with clients who refused sinus surgery and their bodies healed when the problem was chronic infection.  Dot the blend across the forehead and around the cheeks, avoiding the eyes.  Repeat 2 or 3 times a day until symptoms clear.

Sinusitis Blend

In one ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        10 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus

                          1 drop of Sage

                          1 drop of Tea Tree

                          3 drops of Frankincense

                          1 drop of Ginger root

Allow to cure 3 hours, if possible.  Apply to clean skin on the forehead and cheeks.  Repeat every 2 to 3 hours, as needed to drain the sinuses.  For a stubborn infection, it may require several days of treatment.   If fever occurs, seek medical help as well.

Store remaining blend in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Place in a cool area away from direct light.

Eucalyptus is an excellent addition to a cough suppressant blend.  Combine it with Cypress for spasmodic cough and Myrrh to reduce mucus.  Infuse a room or make this blend.

Spasmodic Cough

In 1 ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        6 drops of Eucalyptus

                        4 drops of Myrrh

                        3 drops of Cypress

2 drops of Anise seed (Star anise) (Illicium verum)

Allow to cure 3 hours when possible.  Massage the upper back and chest near the sternum.

This blend can be made into an inhalent by dropping the essential oil blend into 2 cups of steaming water.  The blend may also be added to an aroma lamp to infuse a room.

Store leftover blend in a dark, glass bottle with a screw cap.  Keep in a cool area away from direct sunlight.

Eucalyptus can be dabbed on insect bites and stings.  It effectively repels insects and kills lice.  As an antifungal, dilute it and apply on athlete’s feet.  Two drops of eucalyptus can be diluted in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil to treat the symptoms listed above.

In a sitz bath, eucalyptus treats cystitis, leucorrhea discharges and genital itching.  Eight drops diluted in a sitz bath for 15 to 20 minutes daily will usually clear symptoms in a few days.  Eucalyptus is not recommended for children in a bath or sitz bath.

A whiff of Eucalyptus, dropped on a hankie, can clear the mind of confusion and enhance clarity.  Interestingly, people nearby will either move closer or farther away from the aroma!

EARTH TONES Part III

EARTH TONES

Part III

Patchouli

Patchouli, Pogostemon cablin, is a tall herb in the mint family indigenous to southeast and tropical Asia. The leaves are huge, furry and topped with tiny white and purple flowers.  Fermented leaves are steam distilled to produce a dark amber essential oil, thick and very earthy smelling.  A good patchouli essential oil will improve with age, bringing a rich herbaceous aroma from the depths of a musk scent.  Every layer of aroma has high odor intensity, mysterious and distinctive.  In the Orient, patchouli leaves are stripped and woven into carpet and fabric for its scent and as an insect repellent.

In aromatherapy, patchouli benefits the nervous system as an antidepressant and aphrodisiac.  It also reduces stress and anxiety.  It is a scent diluted in small amounts; best combine with orange, floral and spicy aromas.  Allow the scent to grow to your liking.  Most women soften to its flavor when I tell them it reduces wrinkles and aging skin.  I did too!

Antidepressant Antianxiety blend

In ¼ ounce of carrier oil add the following essential oils:

                        20 drops of Neroli

12 drops of Rose (absolute has the most aroma in this blend)

                          2 drops of Patchouli

1 drop of Cedarwood (Virginia cedarwood is best in this blend) optional

Allow curing overnight.  Apply a few drops on the nape of the neck and massage gently.  You may also apply 1 drop to skin nearest the hairline above the ears.  The hair will allow the scent to lift slowly.  Reapply the blend again as needed, day or night.  Store in dark glass with a tight fitting cap. Refrigerate leftover blend.  This blend may be worn as a perfume.

Patchouli also works well at the far end of the body for athlete’s foot and fungal infections.  Here is a potent blend for fungal growth.

Antifungal blend

In 1 ounce of aloe gel or carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                        2 drops of Patchouli

                        2 drops of Tea tree

                        1 drop of Oregano

Allow curing 3 hours. Lightly massage on affected area twice daily.  Do a patch test if using on the groin area or any sensitive place before massaging the blend onto the entire area.  It may take at least 30 days before a cure occurs.  Store any leftover oil blend in a cool, dark place in dark glass with a tight fitting cap

Patchouli and rose are a classic combination for an ant aging formula and natural perfume.  Add a few drops of bergamot to add a lighter high (head) note.

Cypress

The Cypress tree, Cupressus sempervirens, is another grounding essential oil very connected to the earth.  An essential oil is produced from steam distillation of twigs and leaves,  The slightly yellow essential oil has a very resinous, warm balsamic aroma with a hint of a sweet ambergris scent.

Psychologically, Cypress brings out the best practical nature, dispelling scattered thoughts and avoidance of every day details.  The aroma gets our heads out of the clouds and keeps reality in the present moment.  Cypress restores calmness and supports those who feel “stressed out” or overburdened.  It combines with clary sage and lavender to stop crying spells.

Note:  This blend can be released in an aroma lamp throughout a room.  Delete the sesame oil and only infuse the essential oils.

Physically, Cypress strengthens weakened connective tissue through massage.  Cypress aids in reducing heavy bleeding, especially during menses and menopause.  In massage, it reduces heat flashes and may inhibit growth of ovarian cysts.

$ for broken capillaries, a very light application may be applied directly on the area.  Repeat twice daily.

Store left over blend in the refrigerator.

Add Cypress to an aroma lamp to reduce spasmodic coughing and constantly draining sinuses.

Couch and Sinus Blend

Combine 5 drops of Rosemary and 7 drops of Cypress in an aroma lamp and infuse into a room.

Cypress is beneficial for reducing excessive foot and body perspiration.  It works well in a footbath.

Note:  Some prescription drugs cause increased perspiration.  This blend will aid

In reducing symptoms.

Exotics, Part III

Exotics, Part III

Vanilla, Vanilla planifolia, is an orchid, indigenous to Mexico, Central and South America. The essential oil is extracted from mature beans by a solvent, such as grain alcohol. Essential oil floats on top of the solvent and is removed by low heat until only the oil remains. Vanilla essential oil may be hardened into a thick, waxy mass. This is called a concrete and must be warmed or thinned with alcohol to produce a black thick gooey liquid.

Vanilla and its essential oil is presently very expensive, thousands of dollars a pound. Fortunately, only a tiny amount is needed in a blend. The essential oil is a low note. It is a heavier oil that holds a blend together and allows the scent to lift over a long period of time. Vanilla is such a strong scent, it can easily overwhelm a blend. Use the smallest eyedropper to put 1 drop in a 1 or 2 ounce blend. This blend will hold its fragrance longer and help the recipient feel centered. Vanilla blends well with orange, lime, lavender, and Rose Damascus essential oils.

I use Vanilla in blends to reduce weight. The scent is very comforting and helps the recipient feel secure. It is also helpful for people who have been abused. Typically, they also have weight issues that vanilla essential oil helps. However, anyone who enjoys the smell of vanilla can benefit from this essential oil.

Children love the smell of vanilla. I use the essential oil in several children’s blends. The most popular blend aids children with ADD or ADHD.

The odor of Vanilla essential oil is so strong it is only used very diluted in blends. There is promise of a lighter scented essential oil from a new variety of vanilla found in Peru last year. A student I met from Texas Christian University helped discover a new variety of vanilla and brought beans to my lab. The scent was very warm and distinctly vanilla. The new variety might be used alone when it is commercially available. Until then, here are a few ideas for blends.

            Children’s Room

In a 2 ounce bottle with a mister, add:

1 drop vanilla essential oil

6 drops orange essential oil

Fill bottle with distilled water.

Mist in a child’s room to promote a feeling of warmth and security.

            Attract a Lover

In 2 ounces of sweet almond oil add:

1 drop vanilla essential oil

3 drops Ylang Ylang

2 drops Sandalwood

Allow to cure 1 to 3 hours. Apply a few drops to the neck and seize the night!

Vetiver, Vetiveria zizanoides is a native grass originating from northern India. It is a very tall perennial related to Lemon grass, Palmarosa and Citronella. The plant has dense rootlets radiating 1 to 2 feet from its center. I grow it in Texas on slopes to prevent soil erosion. In India, the roots are woven into mats and screens, enjoyed for their aromatic property.

The essential oil is steam distilled from the rootlets, which are cut and soaked in water before distilling. Vetiver essential oil is dark, thick and reddish brown. The aroma is warm and earthy. Two hundred pounds of rootlets yield 1 pound of essential oil. The cost of Vetiver essential oil is very expensive. Fortunately, a drop in a blend is sufficient. It is frequently used in perfumes to allow the scent to lift over hours. However, the cost of the pure essential oil is so expensive, companies use vetiverylactate synthetic oil for most perfumes and cosmetics.

In aromatherapy, Vetiver is used in blends treating anxiety and nerve disorders, panic attacks and anorexia. It is helpful in blends for stress related illness and depression. Ancients believed it centered the recipient and reconnected the individual to his/her inner being enhancing wisdom and understanding. The essential oil was used for weak immunity in baths and massage oils. Vetiver also treats sexual dysfunction and low libido. Dilute 2 drops in a body massage oil, or add 5 drops into a bathtub of warm water for a 20 minute soak.

How does vetiver treats both sexual dysfunction and insomnia? It’s all in the blend. Used alone in a bath or massage oil, vetiver is calming, warming and pain relieving. Complementary oils include Clary sage, lavender and geranium. To increase libido and sexual function, combine Vetiver with Jasmine, Ylang ylang, lemongrass or sandalwood. Use the blend as a perfume or make an all over body massage.

A sports blend may include Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Orange and Clove bud essential oil. This blend also increases circulation to assist healing for arthritis and rheumatism.

Vetiver also helps relieve menopause symptoms, post partem depression and mood swings. It has a calming estrogenic effect for females. Vetiver may be worn singly or blended with lavender, rose and geranium essential oils in a sweet almond oil base.

In skincare, Vetiver balances sebum secretion to treat acne and oily skin. For aging skin, Vetiver regenerates the deeper layers of skin that have lost fat content. I use it in creams for sagging skin and deep lines. It is 1 component of a blend I make for breast enlargement, sagging breasts and stretch marks. Women like the aroma the more they see results.

            Oily Skin or Acne Blend

In 1 ounce of jojoba oil, add the following essential oils:

5 drops of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

3 drops of lemon grass (Cymbopogon citrates)

1 drop of Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides)

Bottle in dark glass with a screw top. Allow to cure up to 3 hour before using. Apply a few drops on clean skin and massage gently, covering the entire face or site of concern.

            Aging or Dry Skin

In 1 ounce of jojoba or sweet almond oil add the following essential oils:

5 drops of Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

1 drop of Ylang ylang (Canagium odoratum)

1 drop of Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides)

2 drops of Rose (Rosa damascena)

Bottle in dark glass with a screw top. Cure 1 to 3 hours. Gently massage 3 or 4 drops onto skin after cleansing. It is best to patch test dry or cracked skin before smoothing on the entire face.

The Other Orange

Blog 19- The Other Orange

Bergamot, Citrus bergamia, is similar to bitter orange. It is best known for the distinctive flavor given to Earl Grey tea. Most people enjoy the aroma more than the taste. You may have smelled bergamot in colognes and creams.

The origin of this tea is Asia. Today it is mainly grown in Reggio di Calabria, at the tip of the boot of Italy. The best essential oil is grown here, a hybrid of bitter orange and lemon trees. During flowering and harvest, November through February, the region smells like a little bit of heaven.

Bergamot essential oil is made from the inedible, green fruit. The oil is expressed from the glands in the skin. The peel is rasped, squeezed, and pressed. Contents are clarified and filtered to produce an emerald green essential oil. The fruit is yellow and pear shaped. Bergamot is unique in every way and enjoyed by most everyone.

When an aroma is uplifting and unusual, like Bergamot, it has a greater impact in the brain. It is a high or head note in aromatherapy and perfumery. Therefore it will register first in the brain. Studies in Europe confirm that Bergamot essential oil balances the activity of the hypothalamus. This allows it to help bipolar disease and reduce anxiety, depression, and fearfulness. Research by Paoli Rovesti through the University of Milan, was conducted at several psychiatric clinics with outstanding success. Bergamot either calmed or energized people, adapting to their bodies needs. Those plagued by chronic fatigue and stress, found the aroma to be strengthening, and rebuilding for their stamina. Depressed people experienced Bergamot in another way. It enhanced their self-confidence as well as reducing depression. The essential oil was worn, diluted in carrier oil, or applied to an aroma lamp.

For depressed or nervous conditions, bergamot combines well with many essential oils. The citrus family of essential oils: grapefruit, lemon, lime tangerine, mandarin, bitter and sweet orange combine well. I find that clients with these psychological conditions often love the smell of citrus oils.

Other essential oils that combine with bergamot include lavender, angelica, clary sage, cedar, lemon balm mint, and to a lesser extent rose. Bergamot dilutes the high odor of content of essential oils, such as pine, rockrose, cypress, patchouli, cedar wood, vetiver, angelica root, and ginger. Combining essential oils creates a totally new molecular chain. First, the individual essential oil molecules entirely break down and new chains are created from the group of the essential oils combined.  They create a new scent with new therapeutic properties. The possibilities are endless. Every aromatheraist becomes a chemist of scents.

In Italy, bergamot is used to combat infectious disease. Bergamot has been successfully treating staph, diphtheria, meningitis, and many other illnesses. Before World War 11, were not available. Doctors and clients used bergamot for skin, mouth, and respiratory infections. For respiratory problems, the steam of the oil was inhaled and infused in a room. What a delightful way to get well! The oil can also reduce fever. It was applied to the body as a compress. Bergamot has a history of treating malaria as a compress.

In a sitz bath, bergamot relieves cystitis. The oil can reduce abdominal cramps administered in a bath, or diluted in a carrier oil, and applied to the abdomen.

Most interesting is that bergamot treats anorexia. It reduces appetite loss and relieves anxiety and depression. If abdominal problems are involved, bergamot can likely reduce those also. The scent is very light and uplifting, cooling to an overwrought nervous system. People dubbed, as type A will do well to make bergamot their companion. The aroma reduces cranky and frustrated, pent up feelings increasing digestive and skin problems.

For skin problems, bergamot relieves psoriasis, eczema, acne, seborrhea on the scalp, and herpes 1 cold sores. I use it with several essential oils to treat scabies.

Bergamot must be purchased, bergaptene free. Otherwise it increases photosensitivities and may be harmful to the skin, when exposed to sunlight within 12 hours of application.

The essential oil derived from bergamot fruit actually decreases sensitivity to sunlight. Furocumarin, a possible allergic property is removed from the essential oil to assure safety. It is a component in many suntan lotions.

For dry, chapped skin, bergamot can be combined with Roman chamomile essential oil to alleviate symptoms.

In 1-ounce jojoba or carrier oil add:

                        4 drops Roman chamomile

                        1 drop of Bergamot

Allow curing 1 hour before applying to rough or chapped skin.

Note: To apply Bergamot essential oil to the skin, dilute it to 1% or less in a base oil.

Cap tightly in a dark, glass bottle.

Bouquet of Citrus fragrance: Pick me up

Here is a blend based on Bergamot and Oakmoss (base note)

                        In 1-ounce jojoba oil add:

                        1 drop Oakmoss, Evernia prunastri

                        6 drops Bergamot

                        2 drops of lime

2 drops Orange or Bitter orange

                        1 drop Geranium, optional

Allow to cure 1 to 3 hours.

Note: Oakmoss is also known as Mousse de chene.

Bottle in a dark, glass bottle and cap tightly.

Here is a very commonly used combination. I reduced the patchouli, which can overwhelm the other oils.

In 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil add:

                        1 drop Patchouli

                        10 drops Geranium

                        10 drops Bergamot

Cap tightly in a dark, glass bottle. Cure up to 1 week before enjoying.

Wear it or put it in the bath.

Optional: add 1 or 2 drops of lavender or tangerine (or both) to create a new blend.

Exotic Essential Oils: Part One

Exotic Essential Oils: Part One

Exotic essential oils are unique, rare and sometimes expensive. With these essential oils, price can be indicative of quality. They may be grown, and produced in faraway eastern countries, such as India. Each one has a special application.

The essential oil of Cardamom, Elettaria cardamom, has been steam distilled from dried seed since the sixteenth century. It has been used in ancient Ajurvedic and Chinese medicine. Oriental perfumes utilitize its spicy aroma and floral undertones. Cardamom combines with other exotic essential oils such as Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang. As a restorative essential oil, Cardamom is calming to the nervous system. Cardamom is native to India.  Dilute 2 drops of Cardamom in 2 ounces of carrier oil for a relaxing message.

My first exposure to Cardamom was grinding the seeds with coffee beans to detoxify any components of the coffee as it was brewed. When studying with a Brahman priest about Ajurvedic Indian healing, I learned of Cardamom’s healing effect for respiratory and digestive ailments.

In aromatherapy the sweet, woodsy scent of Cardamom makes an excellent massage treatment for digestive complaints. The essential oil alleviates spasms, nausea, flatulence, colic and slow digestion. Most important, Cardamom helps anorexics by increasing digestion and assimilation of nutrients. Cardamom also has aphrodisiac properties.  Two drops diluted in 2 ounces of carrier oil and applied to the abdomen and pelvis to treat impotence.

Cinnamon, Cinnamon zeylanicum, is steam distilled from leaves and very strengthening. I use it to strengthen the circulatory system of clients and to balance high and low blood sugar. Cold feet and arthritis, which worsens in cold, damp weather is helped by this essential oil. It can be diluted in a carrier oil and applied to limbs and especially the lower back for relief of arthritis and coldness. This East Indian spice also aids impotence, by massaging a dilution on the lower back and abdomen.

Dilute 1 drop in 2 ounces of carrier oil for impotence.

Coriander, Coriandrum sativum is a far eastern spice used since ancient Egyptian times for digestive disorders to relieve sprains, muscular pain and stiffness. The seeds crushed and steam distilled to produce a sweet and spicy aroma. Mohammed is said to believe Coriander can heal everything except aging. I use the essential oil in hair care products and special blends to increase hair growth. Ancients used the essential oil in a dilution or as a vapor to reduce body odor and increase libido, in that order.

Dilute 2 drops of Coriander in 2 ounces of carrier oil.

Clove, Syzygium aromaticum or Eugenia caryophyllata, is a pain reliever. It is best known to relieve toothache and abscess. Two drops of essential oil are diluted in 2 ounces of carrier oil, and applied with a cotton ball on the tooth. I also use it for arthritic and muscular pain, diluted in a carrier oil. To relieve headaches, dilute 2 drops of each clove, rosemary, and lavender essential oils in a compress or 3 ounces carrier oil dilution. Apply it to the forehead or back of the neck. Look for essential oil distilled form the buds for best results.

Immortelle, Helichrysum angustifolium, is a Mediterranean herb with a curry scent and flavor. The essential oil is steam distilled from fresh, golden flower buds and has a red color. It is anti-inflammatory for skin disorders and treats acne, eczema, chronic dermatitis, psoriasis and allergic skin problems. Immortelle, otherwise known as curry, is diluted in a carrier oil or non-paraben cream base, 2 drops in 2 ounces of oil or cream. Combined with aloe or St. John’s wort oil, immortelle treats sunburn and may prevent sunburn. Dilute 2 drops in 2 ounces of carrier oil. I prefer jojoba oil. Curry has naturalized in many sunny, drier climates, including my gardens in north central Texas. When using Immortelle, be sure to purchase a non-solvent variety. It should be steam distilled or an effleurage made with vegetable glycerin for medicinal purposes.

Jasmine, Jasmine sambac, originated in east India. The white flower produces a most romantic fragrance at night. It is known in India as “queen of the night”. The heady fragrance can quickly change a mood from darkness to inspiration. It excites sensuality as an excellent aphrodisiac.  The person wearing jasmine essential oil appears more attractive and self-confidant. Spiritually, the aroma increases intuitive awareness and produces encephalin, a neurotransmitter in the brain creating feelings of light- hearted euphoria. The pleasure center compounds in the brain are analgesic, reducing pain, fear, and paranoia. Pure jasmine essential oil is dark, reddish mahogany color. The odor is so strong it is undesirable until diluted. Jasmine actually smells better diluted in light carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil or jojoba oil. One drop in 2 ounces of carrier oil yields a sweeter, less pungent smell with superior healing quantities. As a perfume, or cologne, jasmine is unequaled. Add two drops of Jasmine in 1 dram of distilled water

containing 5 drops of grain alcohol.

The cost of pure jasmine essential oil is also unequaled. One thousand pounds of the small, white flowers yield a pound of essential oil. The blooms must be harvested at night or before sunrise. Approximately, 3 million will produce a pound of essential oil. The cost of one pound of essential oil is more than $5,000 dollars. Synthetic chemically created jasmine scent is about $5.00. Jasmine oil is produced by solvent extraction. The solvents are evaporated. However, even tiny amounts of residue are toxic. Therefore, it is best to know the source producer of this essential oil to guarantee purity. Only the liquid is recommended for aromatherapy. Any sweet perfume-smelling essential oil of jasmine is a fake. If the price seems too good to be true, save your money. Cheap imitations can irritate nasal mucosa and cause redness and irritation to the skin.

Sambac Jasmine essential oil is an aphrodisiac, like so many other exotic essential oils. The Queen of the night excites sensuality and reduces tension or irritability incompatible for lovers. The chemical constitution of Jasmine allows the oil to be easily absorbed into the skin, stimulating the pleasure center of the brain. One drop of Jasmine diluted in 1 dram of jojoba oil can be applied to the neck near the carotid artery. This will travel directly to the brain to create the mood for love. If pregnancy soon follows, Jasmine can also be used for supporting childbirth. Jasmine is a uterine tonic. A dilution of 2 drops of Jasmine in 3 ounces of carrier oil can be managed to relieve back pain and muscle cramps. Jasmine can also reduce tension to support lactation. It has not been detected in breast milk. The essential oil of Jasmine is very effective in greater dilutions. In India, the blossoms are believed to emit moonlight from its blossoms. The fragrance is believed to be magical and ethereal. Use Jasmine wisely and allow it to open your heart.

To be continued…..

AN HERB TO REMEMBER

Rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis, is the herb of festivities.  Historically, rosemary was used by Egyptians for ritual cleansing, healing and spiritual treatment.  Other cultures used rosemary at births, weddings, processions and deaths to celebrate every cycle of life.  It remains an herb of friendship and love.  Rosemary was even used to attract friendly ghosts.

The essential oil of rosemary strengthens the physical body, clears the head and unblocks unresolved emotions.  An essential oil blend moves, drives and clears energy.  Its action is warming, especially increasing circulation and reducing high blood sugar in diabetics.  Rosemary blends with a wide variety of essential oils affecting many conditions and diseases.  The high odor intensity does not make it useful in perfumery.  However, if the aroma is appealing, it can be combined with synergistic essential oils into a favorite blend. Rosemary does not blend well with lavender aromatically.  They tend to cancel each other’s scent.  Also, rosemary is not recommended in high doses for pregnant women or epileptics.  Children do not respond to the pine scent of rosemary.  It may encourage over activity.  A small amount infused into a room may aid concentration.  Use cautiously.  One drop may be sufficient.

Previously, rosemary has been featured to improve hair growth, balancing combination skin and reducing acne.  Its refreshing scent enhances short term memory and increases endorphins.  Medicinally, rosemary is one of the best herbs to enhance circulation.  Many problems may resolve, including sciatic pain, gout, muscular and rheumatic pain.  Arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular problems respond well to rosemary massage oils.  Warm compresses may be applied to the right side to reduce hepatic and gallbladder problems.  Cirrhosis, or hardening of the liver has also responded over time to daily or weekly compresses.  Since it also stimulates the central nervous system, rosemary benefits those who have lost some of their smell, speech and eyesight.  I highly recommend a rosemary facial sprit, or shampoo to increase energy in the morning and reduce the use of caffeine.  I have used it to reduce vertigo in clients, lethargy and even partial paralysis.

The following blends feature rosemary for a variety of ailments.

Heart and Circulation blend In 2 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                                15 drops of Rosemary

                                  5 drops of Lemongrass

                                  5 drops of Angelica root

                                  2 drops of Cinnamon leaf

Bottle in dark glass with a tightly fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure 3 hours before applying as massage oil on the chest, back and legs.  Use this blend for poor circulation, cold legs and feet, low blood pressure and as a heart tonic.

Rosemary also increases blood to the brain.  As a stimulant for the nervous system, it can be used to improve memory, increase concentration and alertness.  It aids those who suffer from chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, debility and related depression.  Weak and nervous people benefit the most from regular use.  Infuse rosemary essential oil into a room with a diffuser, or put a few drops in a bowl of hot water placed near the center of a room’s a blend for those who prefer to wear it.

Rosemary Restorative  In 1 ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                                10 drops of Rosemary

                                  5 drops of Spearmint

                                  3 drops of Lemongrass

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Massage the neck, temples or forehead.  Avoid eye contact and use sparingly.

Gastrointestinal problems can be aided with a rosemary bath or blend.  Symptoms include diarrhea, colitis and colic.  Rosemary’s antiseptic and antispasmodic properties enhance bile flow and reduce digestive complaints.  It especially helps a “nervous, anxious” stomach.  Rub the abdomen with the following blend to abate symptoms and increase immune power.

In 2 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

15 drops of Rosemary (Spanish is stronger.  The whole plant is distilled)

                                  4 drops of Angelica Root

6 drops of Marjoram, Marjorana hortensis (optional) for spasms

                                  5 drops of Pink Grapefruit

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Massage several drops onto the abdomen daily or as needed to abate symptoms.

Rosemary is one of the main detoxifying oils enhancing lymphatic drainage throughout the body.  The abdomen is a major source of lymphatic tissue.  However, the lungs and upper respiratory system is another major source.  The following blend supports chronic lung and respiratory health.  Use it daily or as needed to abate symptoms.  In 1 ounce of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                                10 drops of Rosemary

3 drops of Lemon Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus citradora

                                  1 drop of Thyme

2 drops of Cedarwood, especially if coughs or bronchitis occur.

                                  1 drop of Pine

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap Allow to cure 3 hours.  Massage several drops on the upper back, and or the chest.  Avoid eye contact.

Rosemary alleviates sore muscles, rheumatic pain, painful feet and accelerates healing from sports injuries.  This blend can also be used to reduce and regenerate paralyzed vocal chords and paralysis from surgery.  It is helpful for paralysis due to spinal chord injury when massaged onto the back, legs and arms.  Nature is a great healer.      In 2 ounces of carrier oil, add the following essential oils:

                                20 drops of Rosemary

                                10 drops of Peppermint

                                  4 drops of Juniper berries

                                  4 drops of Vetiver

                                  2 drops of Ginger root

                                  2 drops of Clove

                                  3 drops of Angelica root

Bottle in dark glass with a tight fitting screw cap.  Allow to cure 3 hours or overnight.  Massage affected areas daily or as needed.  Follow with a warm compress for extra comfort.

Rosemary is well known as a remedy for headaches and migraines.  Multiple reasons for these problems make it difficult for 1 plant to be a cure all. Here’s a blend that helps many people who suffer from headaches.  Lavender can be added to reduce spasms.  The blend has a very medicinal scent.

Headache and Migraine Blend in 1 ounce of carrier oil add the following essential oils:

                                10 drops of Rosemary

                                  2 drops of Clove

                                10 drops of Roman Chamomile

                                  5 drops of Marjoram

                                  5 drops of Lavendula
