Cedar wood is a well-known insect repellent, disorienting and disrupting body functions and insect pheromones. In 1960, cedarwood oil was registered with the E.P.A. as a pesticide. It has been used since Egyptian times for preserving the skin, religious ceremonies and avoiding insects. It is considered safe when used as directed, which is small amounts. It is currently popular in hair products to promote a healthy scalp and hair.

In aromatherapy blends, the strong lasting odor marks it as a low note, added first to blends to hold the scent. I suggest starting with 1 or 2 drops in a 1- or 2-ounce blend.

It is also used to renew a cedar smell on cedarwood furniture. It has a balsam and camphor aroma, which is very strong.

Chemical constitutes of cedarwood are sesquiterpenes:  a-cedrene, thujone and cedrol. They are often described as balancing and grounding for emotions in aromatherapy.

Cedar blends well with Cypress and citrus essential oils in small amounts. One or 2 drops is sufficient. More may overwhelm a blend.
