Essential oils for Shingles Symptoms
Essential oils contain antiviral properties that can reduce the shingles viral load and subsequent symptoms. The high amount of esters in some essential oils are especially useful for reducing intense skin and muscle burning, tingling red rash with fluid filled blisters that ooze and form a crust. Symptoms usually occur on one side of the body in a small area. Headache, fever, chills and flu symptoms can occur. Diagnosis must be made by a medical doctor. Shingles originate form chickenpox virus and can display symptoms many years later.
Essential oils may be diluted and applied directly to the affected area, or on a nearby area of skin:
Roman Chamomile, Anthemis nobilis, contains predominately ketones and esters that sedate pain, itching, swelling, eruptions and promote tissue repair. Blend 1 drop of Chamomile in 1 ounce of carrier oil. Red Raspberry is a good choice for shingles.
Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens, also reduces inflammation and promotes tissue repair. Large amounts of its esters are soothing and antiseptic. Use 1-5 drops in 1 ounce of carrier oil.
Lavendula sica and vera, both reduce burning and inflammatory symptoms and promote healthy tissue repair. Although Lavender vera contains more esters, I like to use Spike Lavender because the predominance of ketones promote antiviral properties. Dilute 1-10 drops of essential oil in 1 ounce of carrier oil.
Palmarosa, Cymbopogon martini, is very cleansing, antiviral and antifungal. Dilute 1 to 5 drops in 1 ounce of carrier oil.
Apply essential oil blends directly on affected areas or nearby, 3 to 5 times daily. The essential oils mentioned can be combined in 1 ounce of carrier oil. Use 20 drops or less of essential oils in the blend. It is possible these essential oils can be worn to prevent an outbreak of shingles. Apply them to the neck and chest as a preventative twice a week. Viruses attack when immunity is down. Keep your stress levels balanced with Reduce Stress Therapeutic Essence Blend.
